The primary function of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service (NCARS) unit is to develop knowledge and technology to enhance productivity, profitability, and sustainability in agriculture and the life sciences. It also aims to conserve and improve natural resources and the environment, improve the health and well-being of North Carolina citizens, and provide science-based research for academic and extension programs.
The IR-4 Project is a national Federal/State partnership research program that assists farmers of fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, ornamentals, and other specialty crops by facilitating the registration of safe and effective chemical and bio-based pest management products. This project addresses the gap in crop protection research, which mainly focuses on major crops like corn, soybean, and cotton, by providing strategic pest-management tools to enhance profitability and sustainability for specialty crop farmers.
The IR-4 Project Headquarters provides leadership, coordination, and regulatory compliance for research activities conducted by approximately 125 scientists across various public research farms and laboratories throughout the U.S.
The Executive Director of the IR-4 Project reports to the Associate Dean for Research at CALS. Key responsibilities include:
Coordination, oversight, and management of the IR-4 Project (30%) : Leading research, regulatory activities, and long-term leadership, supporting registration efforts for bio-based and chemical pesticides, and engaging with industry stakeholders.
Program and fiscal management of IR-4 Headquarters (30%) : Directing a team of 28 scientists and staff, managing a budget of around $20 million, developing research protocols, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Advocacy for the IR-4 Project (20%) : Engaging with stakeholders, representing the project at conferences, and managing communication and outreach activities.
Fundraising (20%) : Soliciting funds from industry, government, and foundations to support research and stakeholder engagement activities.
This position is based in Raleigh, NC, at NC State University.
Minimum Education and Experience
PhD in horticulture, plant sciences, pest management, chemistry, or related field, with experience in regulatory science or applied pest management research.
Other required qualifications include attention to detail, excellent communication skills, teamwork, leadership abilities, customer service orientation, willingness to assist others, and multitasking skills. Preferred qualifications include at least 15 years of relevant experience and willingness to travel.
