Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) is seeking a Substation Electrician to support manufacturing areas in and around Berkeley and Hazelwood, MO. Position The Substation Electrician is a skilled, journey-level role performing installation, maintenance and repair of substations. Responsibilities include work on low, medium and high-voltage substations, switching, equipment maintenance and calibration, electrical construction, maintenance, climbing station structures, operating aerial lifts, and troubleshooting electrical utility facilities such as electric transmission, distribution, communication and power monitoring systems. This position operates at journey level for installation, maintenance and repair of substations, circuit breakers, transformers, and primary switching of feeder lines. The role may provide training to apprentices and other staff as assigned and may involve participation in policy and standards development. Collaboration with engineering teams on maintenance and CIP projects is expected. Roles in this class are often filled by advancement from Apprentice Electrical Substation as vacancies occur. Responsibilities Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot and repair simple and complex protective relays, regulator control and operating devices, power transformer protective and safety devices, and maintain records of calibration, testing and maintenance. Install, test, maintain and repair 4160V, 12kV and 34kV power circuit breakers; perform periodic trip testing. Maintain, test and repair 115V, 4kV, 12kV and 34kV power transformers and ATS systems. Sample, test and evaluate insulating oil and other media; maintain records including DGA and dielectric tests. Troubleshoot, repair, maintain and calibrate computer-based SCADA systems, transducers, input devices, communication equipment and data transmission equipment. Perform substation high-voltage switching operations. Test, calibrate, maintain and repair distribution system equipment such as transformers, capacitors, regulators, ATS systems, high-speed ground systems and related control equipment. Test prior to energizing and fault locate high-voltage underground cable systems. Assist with design, programming, installation and maintenance of PLC functions. Install, maintain and repair electric control/protection systems (AC and PLCs). Conduct infrared scanning of substations and transmission/distribution equipment. This position is expected to be 100% onsite at listed location options. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General fundamentals of electrical theory, control relaying, protection relaying, and power switching schemes. Knowledge of power distribution substations SCADA systems. Background in digital solid-state equipment and circuits. Ability to communicate effectively, make sound decisions, and assimilate information in relation to essential job functions. Understanding of electrical codes including NFPA 70E, OSHA regulations and other applicable codes. Ability to use bench test equipment (TTR, Megger, AC/DC Hipot, multimeters, analyzers) and other trade tools. Safe work practices for high voltage switching and maintenance of substation controls, power flow and protection. Safety requirements for low, medium and high voltage systems. Ability to establish cooperative working relationships and effectively organize information and data. Ability to perform maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment found in electric utilities. Ability to read, interpret and update electrical drawings, plans, diagrams and specifications; sketch as-built systems. Ability to manage multiple priorities, organize workload and meet deadlines. Ability to troubleshoot and analyze communication systems; read electrical and distribution maps; and keep accurate records with computer software when necessary. Working Conditions / Physical Requirements Travel between sites; exposure to high voltage and heights; lifting, climbing and stooping. Hazardous conditions are a critical factor; work near energized lines and equipment up to 34,500 volts. Work in confined spaces. Manual handling of heavy electrical equipment and climbing in/out of trucks or buckets. Move electrical components weighing up to 70 pounds; communicate status by oral, face-to-face or radio. Sit for extended periods with movement as needed for ground-level electrical facilities. Security Clearance and Export Control This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance. US Citizenship is required for interim/final clearance; post-start clearance is required. Basic Qualifications (Required) High School Diploma or GED. Completion of an accredited trade school or apprenticeship program. Experience with solid-state circuitry and computer-based test equipment, control, monitoring and analysis systems and related tools. Additional Information The selected candidate must be able to work any shift, as assigned. This is an hourly position governed by the IBEW collective bargaining agreement. New hires or transfers may be required to attend training at start; after training, employees will be on a 90-day probationary period with continued employment contingent on successful completion. Referral Bonus Referral to this job is eligible for a bonus. Bonus amount: USD 1,500. Relocation This position does not offer relocation assistance. Candidates must live in the area or relocate at their own expense. Total Rewards At Boeing, Total Rewards include a competitive base pay and variable compensation, plus a range of benefits such as health insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement plans, life and other insurance programs, and paid/unpaid time off. Pay is based on candidate experience, qualifications, market and business considerations. Summary pay range: $20.41/hour to $38.32/hour USD. Application deadline: Oct. 16, 2025.
