Overview The Senior Dosimetrist designs radiation treatment plans under the direction of the Medical Physicists and Radiation Oncologists. This position has broad knowledge of the physical and geometric characteristics of the radiation equipment, stays abreast of the latest technology through continuing education, mentors other dosimetrists, and creates complex treatment plans using any modality on any planning software.

People Essential Functions

Assumes an advisory role and communicates with radiation therapists in the implementation of the treatment plan, including correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment or imaging parameters.

Guides and mentors dosimetrists and radiation therapists to build confidence in skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Facilitates open, professional communication to achieve mutual understanding.

Service Essential Functions

Applies advanced knowledge and skills to develop complex treatment plans and provides recommendations in collaboration with the Radiation Oncologist.

Creates and transfers reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery, including DRRs, CBCTs, and other IGRT methods.

Provides guidance in simulations and tumor localization and recommends custom shields, wedges, and beam modifying devices.

Quality/Safety Essential Functions

In collaboration with the Medical Physicist, provides technical support to dosimetrists and radiation therapists in radiation safety, quality assurance, and equipment management.

Operates and performs quality assurance on the treatment planning computer(s).

Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures and complies with radiation safety and infection control procedures.

Provides input into research protocols and data collection for RTOG and national data collection organizations.

Finance Essential Functions

Provides accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures and billing procedures.

Uses resources efficiently and recommends cost‑effective work practices.

Manages time effectively and prioritizes daily tasks.

Growth/Innovation Essential Functions

Generates and communicates new ideas and suggestions that improve quality or service.

Collaborates with physics and physicians to advance radiation oncology protocols.

Education

Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations section.

Work Experience

Four years experience as a dosimetrist; may consider three years for a Houston Methodist employee who demonstrates progressive abilities.

Licenses and Certifications – Required

CMD – Certified Medical Dosimetrist (MDCB)

Licenses and Certifications – Preferred

BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.

Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers.

Basic computer knowledge; operates computer systems to maintain patient and exam documents.

Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
