Job Summary
Under the supervision of a superior officer reporting to the Director of Public Safety or designee, the Police Officer is responsible for the safety and security of College properties, faculty, staff, students, guests, and visitors during the assigned tour of duty. The officer patrols buildings, grounds, and adjacent public areas to enforce New Jersey State laws, along with College regulations, policies, and procedures. The Police Officer may supervise security officers and aides as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
Protect life and property by enforcing New Jersey state laws and College policies.
Patrol College buildings and grounds, especially areas with high incident rates.
Prevent and suppress crime; notify superiors of incidents.
Apprehend suspects, respond to complaints, make arrests, and process individuals.
Conduct criminal investigations, gather evidence, interview victims and witnesses, interrogate suspects, and prepare reports.
Testify in court or college hearings as required.
Respond to emergencies such as fires and injuries.
Rescue and revive victims, and radio for medical assistance when needed.
Inspect and maintain equipment including firearms and uniforms.
Participate in training sessions and seminars; conduct training for students, staff, and faculty; assist in training new officers.
Provide directions and information to guests and visitors.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands include lifting, sitting, standing, walking, moving between buildings, communicating via telephone or walkie-talkie, using vision and hearing, and manual handling of objects. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for individuals with disabilities.
Staff must use strength to lift items, and perform tasks such as bending, twisting, climbing, pushing, and pulling.
Additional Requirements
Work in various weather conditions, including during school closures. Flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Be available for emergency recall. Must pass First Aid training. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Possession of a New Jersey Police Training Commission Certification or completion of a NJ Basic Police Academy; fully certified Police Officer or SLEO II with less than three years break in service. Valid NJ Driver’s License with good driving history. Qualification in firearm use (handgun and long gun). At least 21 years old. US citizen and NJ resident. Proficiency in computer use related to campus police duties. Ability to pass background checks, psychological, and drug screening. Effective communication skills in English. Good problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a multicultural environment. Preferred Qualifications Associate or higher degree in Criminal Justice or related field. At least one year of security or police experience on a college campus. Graduate from NJ Police Academy through the alternate route program. Bilingual abilities. Community policing experience and involvement.
