An established intellectual property law firm in Houston is seeking a Patent Associate Attorney to join its growing team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex patent matters across multiple engineering and technology disciplines while developing your legal expertise in a collaborative, client-focused environment.
With fifteen attorneys providing top-of-the-class intellectual property services, this firm was founded in Texas about six years ago. Its practice areas include US agent practice, patent drafting services, patent preparation, and litigation and licensing support. The firm serves a wide range of clients ranging from small to mid-level and large global businesses. The firm aims at expanding its business globally and serving a wider range of clientele.
Job Overview This position involves preparing and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications for leading innovators across industries such as chemical, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering. The successful candidate will partner closely with inventors, entrepreneurs, and corporations to protect and manage valuable IP assets, gaining meaningful exposure to both technical and legal challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications across diverse engineering and technology fields.
Conduct freedom-to-operate and prior art searches to support patent strategy and enforcement.
Manage client patent portfolios and assist in global IP protection efforts.
Collaborate with inventors and in-house teams to develop comprehensive application materials.
Advise clients on patentability, infringement, and strategic IP issues.
Prepare responses to USPTO office actions and assist in appeals or reexaminations.
Support litigation and licensing matters as needed.
Qualifications
2–3 years of patent prosecution experience in a law firm or corporate environment.
Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering (or related field).
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
Licensed to practice law in Texas; USPTO registration preferred.
Exceptional writing, research, and analytical skills.
Ability to translate complex technical concepts into persuasive legal arguments.
