Transmission Line - Engineer III
Mortenson is currently seeking a Engineer III – Transmission Line that will provide routine engineering assignments involving engineering techniques and principles for high voltage transmission projects through 500 kV and for performing a broad scope of engineering assignments of basic difficulty requiring knowledge in engineering-related disciplines.
Responsibilities
Responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design package requirements
Develop the design basis philosophy and other aspects of the design including line routing, structure selection & design, plan & profile drawings, foundation design, hardware & conductor selection, equipment & construction specifications, and all associated calculations on transmission design projects
Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria by using judgment in making adaptations and modifications and providing interpretations and conclusions with support from other Engineers
Interface and present to multiple stakeholders (e.g. customer decision makers, project teams, etc.)
Perform data analysis and routine engineering tasks, calculations and studies to develop preliminary and detailed designs for completion of large and small projects
Perform lead technical designer tasks on a few large design projects annually across 69 kV and above scopes
Review and approve of equipment vendor drawings and test reports on equipment from manufacturers
Provide engineering support for proposals, estimating, procurement and construction
Conduct project detailed designs aligned with our customer requirements and Mortenson’s best practice standards
Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects
Verify that construction is in agreement with electrical engineering design drawings, including preparatory meetings, and QA/QC
Perform routine engineering work requiring applications of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out engineering tasks
Assist in the development and evaluation of the technical requirements for fabrication and construction tender packages
Assist in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
Assist field personnel in resolving unanticipated site conditions
Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
Mentor and guide other Engineering Professionals
Qualifications
Understanding of discipline specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies
Basic knowledge of engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
Project management and analytical problem solving skills
Working knowledge of or are familiar with software packages: MFAD, AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.
A minimum of two (2) years’ design experience with PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE software
Developing knowledge in transmission line design from 34.5 kV to 500 kV
Working knowledge of the T&D industry
Active listening skills and effective communication including an openness to diverse input and feedback
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering program
Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or achievement
Working knowledge of ASCE Substation Structure Design Guide and NESC code requirements and transmission & structure design is required
Ability to travel up to 10%

Base pay range for this role is $93,400 - $126,100. Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
