Job Summary The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking an Associate Director to oversee, guide and implement the Institute’s technical programs.

The Associate Director will lead a team of engineers, scientists and program managers, develop and execute applied research and development projects, secure supplemental funding, and build strategic relationships with industry, university partners and other stakeholders to accelerate green technology and sustainable supply chain practices across New York State.

Responsibilities

Provide guidance to technical staff on opportunity identification, project scope development, budget review and technical report assessment; act as a technical resource on applied research, assistance and project initiatives.

Supervise, manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and program managers including hiring, performance management, goal setting, training and delegation of work.

Leverage comprehensive understanding of industry standards and internal processes to identify and resolve complex business and technical problems; set priorities, allocate resources, develop plans and hold accountability for team performance.

Respond to the director with program related data and provide strategic decision support.

Oversee program management and execution; assist with metrics targets, collect and report progress to the Institute director.

Build strategic relationships with industry, trade organizations, university and MEP partners; represent the Institute at conferences and events.

Develop new project concepts in response to environmental challenges impacting New York State and write grant proposals seeking project funding.

Co‑develop the direction of the Institute based on assessment of current and expected environmental challenges; collaborate with the Institute director, program administrator and director to develop annual work plans and metrics goals.

Collaborate with the larger Golisano Institute for Sustainability organization on special projects and initiatives.

Required Qualifications

Minimum 10 years related work experience, including at least 5 years in a technical P2 or clean‑tech/sustainable technology environment.

Minimum 8 years of experience in a leadership role with supervisory responsibility.

Expert‑level knowledge in manufacturing processes and experience in a manufacturing environment.

Experience with technical proposal development and securing grant funding.

Experience conducting and managing applied or use‑inspired research projects.

Skills & Competencies

Demonstrated knowledge of engineering, environmental science, sustainability or clean energy.

Strong technical writing skills and ability to produce clear, concise documents.

Highly motivated, self‑directed, and able to think creatively, solve complex problems and proactively adapt to changing environments.

Strong project and program management skills with ability to set short‑ and long‑term goals, develop strategies and coach others.

Excellent communication skills at all levels, including individual contributors through C‑suite.

Ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, negotiate and influence partners.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a technical field of study (engineering, chemistry, environmental studies, sustainability, or related field).

Experience working with state and/or federal funding and contracting processes.

Experience with technology commercialization or green‑tech incubation.

Familiarity with NYS DEC regulations and environmental initiatives.
