Key Functions
Performs gross description and dissection of tissues removed at surgery, including selection and submission of specimens for histological, microbiological, immunological and other specialized testing.
Reviews and summarizes relevant patient information and verifies proper documentation has been obtained for tissue use in research.
Provides patient medical history to pathologist.
Participates in the education of the technical staff, surgical pathology fellows and residents relative to tissue grossing techniques.
Maintains patient and procedure data relative to the workload and quality assurance of section operations.
Ensures compliance with accrediting agencies for pathology laboratory activities, including documentation of competency testing.
Assists section management with oversight of operations and personnel in the surgical pathology and autopsy laboratories by directing workflow issues relative to the collection of patient tissue.
Other duties as required.
Education
Graduation from accredited Pathologist Assistant Program.
Bachelor's Degree in Biological sciences or allied health sciences.
Work Experience
Required: No experience required if graduated from an accredited Pathologist Assistant Program.
Required: 3 years Experience performing gross examination and evaluation of human surgical and/or autopsy specimens with a Bachelor's degree.
Licenses and Certifications
Required: PA(ASCP) - Pathologists' Assistant American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). within 180 Days.
