Overview

The City of San Jose’s Department of Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement ensures orderly and safe development of private properties, compliance with all building, zoning, and quality of life ordinances, and promotion of healthy and safe community standards.

Responsibilities

Assist and guide land‑use and development projects to promote long‑term community goals. Administer building code compliance to ensure constructions meet intended life‑safety and structural requirements. Investigate and resolve citizen complaints about municipal code violations to improve quality of life. Supervise, train, and mentor a team of plumbing and mechanical inspectors; assign inspections based on technical complexity. Provide advanced technical guidance on plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, hydronic, and gas piping codes. Review complex plumbing and mechanical plans, specifications, and calculations for code compliance. Lead specialized training sessions on updates to combined plumbing and mechanical codes and emerging technologies. Serve as the primary technical resource for disputes or appeals related to plumbing and mechanical code interpretations. Develop and implement inspection protocols and checklists tailored to integrated plumbing and mechanical systems. Collaborate with other trade supervisors to coordinate inspections on multidisciplinary projects. Prepare detailed reports and professional recommendations regarding enforcement of plumbing and mechanical codes. Perform field construction inspections on new or remodeled industrial, commercial, and residential facilities. Provide ongoing reports to management, including written reports and oral presentations of code enforcement inspections and program performance analyses.

Qualifications

High‑school graduation or equivalent (GED) is required. Six (6) years of experience in construction as a journeyman carpenter, plumber, air‑conditioning mechanic, electrician, or related contractor, or experience performing inspections for a public agency. Valid California Driver’s License. Certification in plumbing/mechanical specialty (and other trade certifications are encouraged). Possession of valid Inspector Certification issued by an agency acceptable to the City in the trade discipline(s) being supervised.

Salary Range

Building Inspector Supervisor Cert I: $155,653.68 – $189,636.72 per year. Building Inspector Supervisor Cert II: $159,999.84 – $194,878.32 per year.
