Description Of Job

About the Position

This role provides technical support to the Flexible Pavement Lab by performing standardized testing procedures, operating laboratory equipment, accurately recording data, and submitting results to engineering staff. The position plays a key role in ensuring quality and consistency in lab operations.

Major duties and responsibilities

  • Performs Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) testing in the Flexible Pavement Unit as prescribed by the Colorado Procedures (CDOT Field Materials Manual and CDOT Laboratory Manual of Test Procedures).
  • Maintains LabCAT ABC certifications and uses this knowledge to ensure samples are correctly prepared for testing (certification required within six months of being hired).
  • Assists with advanced testing, such as CP-L 5106 (Hveem Stability), CP-L 5115 (Density of specimens compacted by the SuperPave Gyratory Compactor), and CP-L 5109 (Resistance of Bituminous Mixture to Moisture Induced Damaged).
  • Uses equipment such as: Vacuum Pumps, Mechanical Splitters, Mechanical Shakers, Mechanical Washer, Ignition Ovens, Stabilometers, and Gyratory Compactors.
  • Receives and logs in samples such as the 10K, RAP, AMRL, Round Robin, and Correction Factor samples.
  • Reviews and ensures the sample submittal form is accurate and valid for the required testing and contains the necessary information.
  • Compares test results with procedure requirements to make sure it meets the specifications and CDOT requirements.
  • Enters test results into LIMS and compares to make sure it meets the specifications and are in tolerance with other test data.
  • Reports any test issues to the Lab Manager of any issues discovered during the testing process.
  • Checks statewide CDOT laboratory testing equipment during the annual lab inspections and as requested by the region labs such as mobile labs and satellite labs (requires overnight travel for a week minimum).
  • Maintains, repairs, and calibrates Flexible Pavement testing equipment as required and maintains calibration records in accordance to AASHTO R18.
  • Utilizes all appropriate PPE and follow all safety procedures.
  • Performs AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory testing and performs Hot Mix Asphalt Round Robin sample setups, testing, and reporting of test results.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or wind conditions caused by the weather.
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles.
  • May be required to drive during daytime working hours to pick up samples and lab supplies, as well as occasional out of town travel day travel for lab inspections. Occasionally travel to CAPA to proctor.
  • Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force regularly to move objects.
  • Exposure to non-weather related hot and cold temperatures.
  • Contact with water and other liquids or exposure to non-weather related humid conditions.
  • Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, mists, gasses, dusts and poor ventilation that may affect the respiratory system, eyes or the skin.
  • Proximity to moving mechanical parts.
  • Exposure to radiant energy.
  • Exposure to shaking objects or surfaces.
  • Performs high heat testing.
  • Exposure to high pressure conditions, toxic vapors or caustic chemicals.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Four (4) years of experience performing construction inspection, conducting or assisting with laboratory materials testing, and/or assisting in the design of construction plans or construction documentation.

Substitution

A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 4 years:

  • Education from an accredited U.S. college or university with coursework in civil engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered. (Transcripts / NACES report required for verification).
  • Experience performing construction inspection, conducting or assisting with laboratory materials testing, and/or assisting in the design of construction plans or construction documentation.

College Transcripts

Conditions of Employment

  • A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
  • Must obtain LABCAT ABC certifications within 6 months of hire.
  • Shift work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section.
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and the CDOT Field Materials Manual and CDOT testing procedures.
  • Experience with CDOT Asphalt Round Robin processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of AMRL/CCRL proficiency samples testing or certifications.
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations, and to learn from others.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment.
  • Strong mathematical skills (e.g. algebra, geometry, trigonometry).
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Demonstrate flexibility.
  • Passion for safety.
  • Passion for Asphalt Mix Design theory.
  • Excellent reasoning, analytical, and problem solving ability.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret numerical data.
  • Excellent MS Office Suite (Word, Excel), Gmail, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn new software.
  • Certifications in LABCAT ABC.
  • Certifications in WAQTC, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I and II, and CDOT's School of Radiological Safety and Nuclear Gauge Operation preferred.
