Compensation and Benefits:
Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $42,072 - $55,358 Full Salary Range: $42,072 - $75,287 Annually, depending on qualifications.

Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Schedule may change during holiday weeks or for emergency services, requiring a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, or holidays. This position is also subject to after-hours on-call responsibilities.
The City of Greensboro is seeking a dedicated Heavy Equipment Operator (Concrete/Asphalt) to join our Transportation Department. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the City's streets and infrastructure by ensuring safety and efficiency in street maintenance and repair operations. About the Role:
As a Heavy Equipment Operator (Concrete/Asphalt), you will be responsible for operating heavy equipment in support of street maintenance and repair activities. The primary focus of this role is to operate a backhoe safely and effectively, but responsibilities will also include working with other heavy machinery such as skid steers, mini excavators, and motor graders. Additional duties may include:
  • Driving dump trucks and participating in street maintenance activities.
  • Operating equipment for the City's snow removal program.
  • Performing labor tasks such as concrete forming and finishing, as well as asphalt-related work.
  • Working in and around traffic and heavy equipment, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.

This position requires physical stamina, including standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, walking on uneven surfaces, shoveling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to able to acquire a Class A Commercial Driver's Permit within 30 days and a Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement within 120 days of employment. Must also have reliable means of contact (home or cellular telephone).

  • High School Diploma/GED with 1 year of experience operating heavy equipment, such as backhoes, skid steers, mini excavators, and motor graders.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in concrete and/or asphalt work.
  • Experience reading blueprints or cut sheets.
  • Experience interpreting grade stakes and digging on grade.
  • Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with a tanker endorsement.
