Job Summary

The Custodian I completes sanitation of restrooms, showers, locker facilities and replenishes supplies. This person sweeps, mops, vacuums floor surfaces, removes trash, cleans chalkboards, walls and other items as required, and cleans, polishes and moves furniture and equipment for special events when needed. The Custodian I also meets with customers for feedback on work performed, may lock and unlock buildings and cleans, polishes and stores equipment after use.

Compensation

Base pay range $15.00/hr – $15.00/hr

Work Schedule

This is a full‑time, benefits‑eligible position. Work hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The incumbent is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work.

Minimum Requirements

  • No formal education or experience is required.
  • Must be able to speak and understand basic English.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team with others.
  • Ability to follow directions.

Preferences

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months of previous custodial/housekeeping experience.

Essential Functions

  • Cleans showers, restroom floors, lavatories, fixtures, kitchenettes, public spaces, offices, laboratories, etc.
  • Replenishes paper supplies.
  • Vacuums, sweeps, dusts and mops floors.
  • Cleans and polishes furniture, glass, doors, mirrors, walls and other surfaces.
  • Removes trash.
  • Identifies and reports needed repairs.
  • Assists other custodians with work as needed.
  • Performs all other duties assigned.

Additional Functions

  • When short of staff, custodial staff will be required to clean multiple buildings throughout the work day.
  • Meets with customers for feedback on work performed.
  • Documents work performed on a work order including tasks done and hours charged.
  • Moves furniture and equipment to facilitate cleaning or set up for special events when needed.
  • May lock and unlock buildings as required.
  • Must perform Cleanology inspections on a quarterly basis and maintain an 80% or above rating.

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Primarily an indoor work environment in a variety of university settings, which may include offices, laboratories, classrooms, athletic facilities, covered walkways, etc. May be exposed to temperature and weather extremes when working under covered walkways or in facilities that are not climate‑controlled.

Work Hazards: Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas. Possible exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals.

Work Schedule: 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is a possibility of overtime weekly, and overtime may be mandatory based on the circumstances or emergencies.
