The Department of Athletics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Associate Director of Compliance.

About The Opportunity

This position will assist the Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance to ensure compliance with all aspects of NCAA and Big 12 Conference rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletic operations.

What You'll Do

Research and provide rules’ interpretations for athletic department staff members, including researching questions regarding NCAA rules presented by coaching staff, athletic administrators, and personnel from other departments.

Serve as the primary liaison to the Office of Financial Aid to administer the awarding of initial and continuing offers of athletically related financial aid to all student-athletes. Process all athletic aid increases, reductions, and cancellations and classify outside financial aid awards in accordance with NCAA regulations.

Coordinate the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program.

Prepare Squad Lists for all sports. Monitor individual student-athlete and team financial aid limitations to ensure compliance with NCAA, conference and institutional regulations.

Assist the Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance in the administration of the Student-Athlete Assistance Fund. Duties include accepting and approving/denying applications for processing from student-athletes; verify eligibility with Compliance and Financial Aid Office; solve problems and issues.

Serve as the support and backup to the financial aid functions of the athletic business office; computing of scholarship percentages and applying financial aid awards to student accounts for tuition, fees, room, board and books; authorize postings to student accounts and authorize disbursements.

Serve as the athletic compliance representative at all athletic grant-in-aid appeal hearings.

Serve as the compliance liaison to the Office of Student Accounts to monitor scholarship disbursements, holds, and account balances.

Serve as the compliance liaison to Housing services to monitor and assist in the student housing process.

Serve as the compliance liaison to Dining services and the Athletic Business Office to monitor meals and expenses surrounding practice and competition.

Monitor occasional meal requests for all sports.

Coordinate the awards process and application of awards legislation for all sports.

Perform football game day compliance operations including assistance with player/guest will call, recruiting visits, recruiting pre-game credentials, and game day monitoring.

Assist in the administration of the summer school athletics aid process in addition to the post eligibility and the degree completion program.

Assist in the completion and submission of required NCAA and Big 12 reports, waivers and appeals.

Assist in rules education processes as assigned by the Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance.

Assist with the investigation and reporting of all NCAA violations with the Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance and NCAA.

Draft financial, statistical, narrative, and/or other reports as requested.

Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance and the Senior Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance.

Report directly to the Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance; must also work closely with all others involved with carrying out the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletic program.

Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations. Keep abreast of current information and changes in NCAA legislation.

Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA; must adhere to NCAA Bylaw 11 Conduct of Athletic Personnel. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.

Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial and ethnical differences.

Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports within the intercollegiate athletic program.

Possess the ability to adapt to any situation, make decisions and work independently; position must have the ability to build and maintain relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff members and contractors; required to use creative abilities to develop new techniques and approaches in dealing with many issues controlled by this position; responsibilities of the position are ever-changing and require constant research and education. It also requires the ability to adapt to any situation and make decisions.

Manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches and staff utilizing discretion and correct decisions. Failure to use proper discretion at required level could result in major and significant embarrassment to the University and/or have a significant impact on image, revenues and eligibility of student-athletes.

Manage professional and personal time to be handle time sensitive-issues, tight deadlines, extended hours beyond the normal workday, weekend work, regular travel in-season and on-call availability.

Faithfully and diligently execute related duties of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, as requested or assigned by the Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance and the Senior Associate Athletics Director-Governance and Compliance

A Master’s degree or advanced professional degree, preferably in business, public administration, sports administration or related field.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in NCAA rules compliance required, preferably at the Division I level.

Strong working knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines and ability to apply and enforce those rules.

Previous experience with NCAA regulations related to financial aid preferred.

Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.

All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Demonstrated knowledge of Division I (FBS) intercollegiate athletics.

Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and conference guidelines, policies, rules and regulations with the ability to interpret, apply, enforce and explain such policies and rules.

Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate groups and individuals. Ability to maintain proper unit attendance and punctuality standards, work extended hours including nights and weekends (often with extensive walking and standing).

Demonstrated skills in management of athletic compliance program.

Ability to function as a liaison for Athletics with several administrative departments within higher education and at the conference and national level.

Demonstrated knowledge of financial aid and eligibility requirements of student-athletes.

Ability to participate in an investigation, including the preparation and submission of reports to the NCAA.
