Job Description The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Communication

Keeps co-workers and intra‑op staff informed of any updates/issues.

Follows written instructions as needed.

Quality

Maintains, operates, and monitors all equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and department standards.

Technical Competency

Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application.

Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.

Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education:

High School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.

Experience:

Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure:

Current Surgical Tech Certification required, or if employed prior to July 1, 2021, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required.

Additional Skills/Requirements:

Ability to create and maintain a sterile field. Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials. Basic understanding of medical terminology. Computer skills.

Physical Demands Medium to Heavy Physical Demand. The job requires constant sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally. For any weight over 35 lbs. use Safe Handling Equipment.
