Job Details The Perfusionist is a highly skilled medical technologist responsible for operating extracorporeal circulation equipment, such as heart‑lung machines, during cardiovascular surgeries. Reporting to the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support, the Perfusionist works closely with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, and surgical technologists to ensure safe management of patients' circulatory and respiratory functions during surgery, monitor vital signs, and administer medications and blood products.
Responsibilities
Operate heart‑lung machines and other extracorporeal circulation devices during surgeries.
Monitor and adjust equipment settings to maintain optimal patient conditions.
Ensure safe and effective operation of all perfusion equipment.
Monitor patients' vital signs and physiological functions during surgery.
Assess and respond to changes in patients' conditions.
Communicate with the surgical team to ensure patient safety.
Administer medications and blood products through perfusion equipment.
Ensure accurate dosage and delivery of medications.
Maintain records of administered substances.
Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot perfusion equipment.
Manage inventory of supplies and equipment.
Maintain accurate patient records and prepare reports for surgical team and hospital administration.
Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Perfusion Technology or a related field.
2 years of relevant clinical experience in perfusion.
Certification as a Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Perfusion Technology or a related field.
5 years of clinical experience in a hospital or surgical setting.
Experience with advanced perfusion techniques and equipment.
Advanced certification in specialized perfusion techniques.
Salary Range $150,000+ depending on qualifications.
Working Environment and Equipment
Standard office equipment.
Repetitive use of a keyboard.
Lifting and moving.
May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, hazardous medications, disoriented or combative patients, or others.
