Job Summary The successful candidate will provide technical and regulatory support to generating facilities in Duke Energy's Midwest service area (Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky). The primary environmental compliance subject areas are Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), ambient monitoring systems, and stack emissions testing.
General Responsibilities
Safely support environmental regulatory compliance for electric generating facilities in the Duke Energy Midwest service area, focusing on air emissions monitoring systems at Gibson Generating Station.
Provide technical expertise regarding USEPA Emission Test Methods, legacy Acid Rain and New Source Performance Standard CEMS (SO2, NOx, CO2, CO, O2, Flow), Continuous Opacity Monitors (COMS), Mercury Continuous Emissions Monitors & Sorbent Traps, and Particulate Matter Continuous Emissions Monitors.
Specific Responsibilities
Ensure CEMS O&M processes and data quality adhere to regulatory requirements and Duke CEMS Program standards.
Provide day‑to‑day CEM systems functional oversight, ensuring the accurate transfer of signals to/from the CEMS Data Acquisition Handling System (DAHS).
Verify CEMS DAHS programming satisfies both regulatory standards and facility controls.
Collaborate with facility operations and project management to acquire resources to perform maintenance, install equipment improvements, and complete required tests.
Coordinate stack tests with station operations, ensuring facility equipment protection and contractor safety, and verify compliant procedures are followed.
Quality‑assure emissions data, prepare reports, and verify report content and calculations prior to submittal.
Additional Responsibilities
Serve as subject matter expert for technical programs and compliance issues supporting environmental goals, strategies, programs, and processes.
Track regulatory changes, legislative activities, and industry standards, identifying needed changes to facility compliance programs.
Represent Duke Energy on various internal and external industry committees and teams.
Develop and maintain procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental laws and regulations.
Provide regulatory‑required and internal environmental reports and environmental training programs.
Participate in preparation and negotiation of facility permits with federal, state, and local authorities.
Support the department’s routine and special projects to accomplish business objectives.
Continuously develop and improve job‑related technical knowledge and skills to meet expectations efficiently.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Health and Safety, or related field.
Minimum 3 years related work experience for EHS Consultant; 6 years for Senior EHS Consultant.
In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, a High School/GED and 7 years (EHS Consultant) or 10 years (Senior EHS Consultant) of directly related work experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience installing, operating, and maintaining CEMS equipment such as analyzers, solenoids, compressors, air dryers, and scrubbers.
Experience using and programming PLCs, Data Loggers, and Data Acquisition System software.
Familiarity with environmental regulations applicable to electric generation and air emissions monitoring.
Experience with emissions database quality assurance and regulatory reporting.
Knowledge of MODBUS TCPIP protocol and power generation equipment.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a customer‑oriented focus.
Working Conditions
Office and power plant locations with exposure to machinery, heat, cold, noise, dust, and humidity.
Occasional physical activity, lifting up to 40 pounds, walking on uneven surfaces, and climbing stairs or ladders.
Occasional overtime, weekend, outage, and callout work.
Vehicle travel to field locations; typical travel safety factors.
Specific Requirements
Valid driver’s license.
Travel Requirements 5–15% travel.
