Senior Underwriting Manager, Middle Market Life Sciences We are building our dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team to launch Liberty Mutual's specialized Life Sciences Industry Practice within the Middle Market. Under the leadership of Tory Agnich, Chief Underwriting Officer, Middle Market Life Sciences, our vertical is committed to delivering comprehensive, integrated multi-line Property and Liability insurance solutions tailored to mid‑sized companies (R&D stage through $2B insured product/service revenue) spanning biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, dietary supplements, analytical laboratories, digital health innovators, cellular and tissue‑based products, and the broader ecosystem that supports these companies. As Liberty Mutual builds our new dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team focused on the Middle Market, we are seeking a Senior Underwriting Manager to join us on the ground floor at a core level. This role offers a unique blend of hands‑on underwriting responsibilities for an experienced underwriter to support the early‑stage growth of this specialized practice, with future leadership expectations as needs expand. As a Senior Underwriting Manager in our formative phase, you will be instrumental in our go‑to‑market launch, external brand development across strategic alliances, and building key broker and client partnership relationships. You will work in collaboration with Liberty's strong distribution and client service network to educate our trading partners on our specialized, integrated, dynamic, and scalable product and service capabilities. As we grow our portfolio, the role will evolve into a leadership position focused on strategic business planning, ownership of underwriting initiatives and results, people management, and regional portfolio performance management. This is an exciting opportunity to influence the growth and success of the Life Sciences practice in a critical foundational role. Based on the geographic spread of opportunity, 25% travel is expected. This role is a hybrid: 2 days/week in office and 3 days/week WFH.

Responsibilities

Establish a visible external profile and maintain excellent relationships with external agents, brokers, partners, and stakeholders to grow the Life Sciences Middle Market portfolio.

Execute Go‑To‑Market Strategy and Strategic Distribution Plan for brand awareness, education of trading partners, and full appreciation of Liberty's product and services capabilities for Life Sciences risks.

Lead pipeline development strategies for Life Sciences Industry Practice.

Underwrite individual accounts (mostly new business underwriting) including risk selection, risk assessment, pricing, crafting of terms/conditions, quoting/binding, and servicing a book of business. Operate with commensurate level of underwriting authority.

Uphold and exemplify Liberty's value proposition across the business and the market. Service existing accounts and meet with clients.

Accountable for the performance of the growing Life Sciences portfolio. Assist CUO with forecasting and planning.

Lead or support projects and initiatives to help grow Liberty's Life Sciences Industry Practice, designed to drive underwriting and process excellence.

Model effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders and partners (e.g., Distribution, Operations, UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in North America).

Maintain strong knowledge of key legal cases, legislation and regulation impacting underwriting expertise and the Life Sciences industry.

Share knowledge based on technical expertise, including providing external thought leadership.

Mentor, coach, and train other underwriters and internal partners.

Qualifications

Degree in Business, Risk Management, or Scientific Field or equivalent typically required.

A minimum of 10 years of progressive underwriting experience, including a minimum of 2 years of proven underwriting management experience preferred.

CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.

Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.

Proven analytical ability to evaluate high‑impact underwriting exposures specific to all Property and Liability Lines of Business for Life Sciences risks.

Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposes.

Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders required.

Demonstrated comprehension of the most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues.

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
