Job Description
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join our team. We welcome candidates at all career stages - from recent graduates to experienced engineers. The Manufacturing Engineer is focused on manufacturing and optimization of glass components processed through similar means as optical glass fiber draw and mechanical finishing. This position requires an in-depth knowledge of material science. This role is best suited for an individual who is able to apply their knowledge of material science to the process, is hungry to learn, conduct research to better optimize processes, and has the ambition to drive improvement projects to completion. Depending on experience level, responsibilities may include project ownership, mentorship of junior engineers, or leading cross-functional initiatives.
Position responsibilities include:
Optimizing manufacturing and process systems and implementing cost reduction opportunities (yield and productivity improvements, waste elimination)
Diagnosing process and equipment issues and working with area engineering technician and maintenance teams to keep equipment running optimally
Working with and assisting in training bargaining unit employees to improve work processes and product quality
Working to minimize or eliminate safety, quality, delivery, inventory, and productivity problems
Working with R&D engineering to test, refine and implement new product ideas
Assist with new glass composition development
Using hand and machine tools, precision gauges, test instruments, and process equipment
Primary engineering oversight of Fiber Draw/Boule fabrication, bevel, and polish
Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
BS in Chemical, Materials, Glass, Ceramic Engineering or Equivalent
Ability to obtain Security Clearance
Proficiency in statistical analysis techniques
Effective communication and documentation skills
Basic MS Office skills; Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Preferred Additional Skills
Proficiency with designing structured experimentation
Ability to handle multiple high priority projects
Experience with or knowledge of glass fiber drawing (optical or other)
Proficient with fundamental glass properties
Familiarity with vacuum systems/ovens
Familiarity with grinding/polishing operations
Familiarity with component cleaning processes
Application of DMAIC and advanced statistical tools
Proficiency with statistical analysis software; JMP, Minitab
Ability to collaborate with all facets of the NightVision organization
Comfortable with self-initiating business and professional improvements
Ability to support the organizational culture and build morale
