Job Summary This is an advanced level and/or lead position in which work assignments require the regular application of generally acknowledged expertise in the electro-optics engineering field, and the use of considerable initiative and creativity. The incumbent provides technical leadership in significant design, development and research projects, and in the preparation of technical proposals. Project management assignments for large technical proposals and R & D programs require substantial coordination with internal sources of information, oversight of the work of other engineers, and may involve representing the company where technical credibility is required. Provides expert explanations, techniques or approaches to colleagues, management and customers. Provides technical direction and oversight within a development project.
Responsibilities and Tasks
Provide technical leadership over complex, major design, and development projects
Prepare project requests detailing proposed engineering work costs and product timetable
Provide technical presentation support and consultation to marketing
Represent company unit to customers
Recommend the addition, expansion or termination of projects and assure the technical soundness of engineering programs
Evaluate and select optimum design alternatives
Prepare cost estimates on proposed major design products
Plan and lead experiments to evaluate operating characteristics of products or processes
Produce innovative technical solutions to customers’ problems
Prepare technical proposals for competitive bids
Research information on equipment and cost for project proposals
Perform preliminary engineering necessary to confirm plans and programs
Develop potential applications to exploit new business opportunities
Collect and analyze information on competitor product performance
Initiate and conduct field testing and research work for new applications
Provide application engineering to customers
On a project or on-going basis, supervise the work of other engineering personnel
Utilize project planning and monitoring methods to ensure timely completion and communicate project status to appropriate departments
Originate and communicate concepts which could lead to new products
Review and approve completed design work
Education, Experience & License or Certification
Bachelor's degree in engineering, optics, physics, or similar with 12 years of experience, master’s degree and 10 years' experience, or Doctorate and 7 years' experience, preferably in a design-to-manufacture environment
Incumbents should possess an extensive knowledge of electro-optics engineering with specific capabilities in areas such as optical design, imaging system development, electrical design, and software
Direct experience in system level design requiring an understanding of mechanics, electronics, and software, including system specification flow-down is strongly preferred
Experience in the management of a team of engineers and technicians on a project or supervisory basis
Experience in the management of significant programs and projects to specified schedules and budget goals is preferred
Incumbents should possess knowledge of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for one or more areas of technical expertise, and possess creativity and originality sufficient to contribute to new inventions, designs or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of important problems
