R-0000052383**Job Description Summary**A Research Specialist IV (RS4) laboratory manager is needed to support glycomics and extracellular matrix research and analytical assay development for three research laboratories housed within the MUSC Proteomics Center. This Center is supported by federal and foundation research grants to the individual investigators, Professors Drake, Mehta and Angel, as well as the NIDDK Digestive Disease Research Center Core grant. The RS4 will be responsible for managing multiple research budgets, oversee ordering of supplies and reagents, direct routine maintenance of multiple mass spectrometers and be the point of contact for the instrument manufacturer. The RS4 will also be the point of contact for personnel within the facility, and will ensure all laboratory staff follow and adhere to safety and all applicable health policies and regulations.

It is expected that the candidate will have a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biochemistry or related field and have at least 5 years relevant experience in a mass spectrometry research laboratory. This should include at least one year of experience in supervising and/or lab management of a mass spectrometry laboratory. Performs routine diagnostic and maintenance of three MALDI mass spectrometers.30% Performs tandem mass spectrometry protein and glycoprotein experiments on tissues and biofluids as part of joint research projects within the three laboratory groups. Performs routine diagnostic and maintenance of two HPLC systems and one timsTOF mass spectrometer.15% Performs training of new personnel to the laboratories for use of all mass spectrometers, and assist current laboratory personnel in continued training and new method development.10% Maintains additional laboratory equipment by performing checklist systems suitability and required maintenance. Serve as the point of contact for instrument manufacturers and liaison to department administrative staff.15% Keeping the lab safe, clean and compliant by maintaining a neat work space, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and helping with labeling and inspection of laboratory items and solutions**General Nature of Work:**Directs large, complex research projects in a clinical or research setting, ensuring all laboratory staff follow and adhere to safety and all applicable health policies and regulations.Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics:This is a supervisory class with responsibility for a large laboratory performing a high volume of tests, procedures or examinations.**Examples of Work:**Plans and directs new and innovative research projects and concepts, in collaboration with the principal investigators. Oversees and reviews the activities of employees, graduate assistants and others engaged in research or related activities, ensuring all lab employees follow industry standards and safety regulations for handling and disposing of test samples. Monitors all lab personnel to ensure adherence to safety and health policies and regulations, as well as federal and state mandates and accepted scientific practices. Performs highly specialized and complex research examinations, procedures and tests; may conduct specialized research. Develops, oversees or conducts technical training. Operates, maintains and repairs complex scientific equipment. Plans and organizes research and evaluation of scientific literature; composes and reviews articles for publication in scientific journals. Uses manual and computer techniques to analyze research data. Prepares periodic and special narrative and statistical reports to advise principal investigators and others on research techniques and procedures. Oversees or performs examination and testing of human subjects for research purposes. Functions as principal investigator for less complex research projects. Develops and recommends changes in technical and administrative policies, procedures and protocols. Develops data and recommendations for budget proposals. Provides technical consultative services. Handles confidential documents and ensures that all information and data collected in the research laboratory is kept safe, often requiring use of special software and computers. Trains lab technicians and assistants on the correct use of lab equipment, in addition to mentoring and disciplining lab staff.**MUSC Minimum Qualifications:**Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology, microbiology, biochemistry or a closely related field and **four years’** relevant experience in a clinical or research laboratory environment; **relevant experience includes minimum of one year of experience supervising or managing a research laboratory.****Additional Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:**Knowledge of the principles, laboratory applications and information sources for the natural sciences. Ability to perceive colors normally and to make olfactory distinctions. Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and be able to lead and direct others.
