Faculty Position

Summary Description University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Dentistry invites applicants for a full‑time clinical faculty position in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. Energetic applicants with a positive attitude toward teaching and a desire to develop and advance in a career in dental education are preferred.

A group practice leader's responsibilities will be to evaluate and mentor pre‑doctoral students regarding comprehensive patient care, clinical teaching in diagnosis and treatment planning, one day per week of faculty practice, participation in scholarly activity, and service to the organization. In addition, the GP Director leads the practice in achieving optimal efficiency and productivity.

The GP Directors will dedicate 80% of their effort to the group practice leader role with the remaining 20% dedicated to additional teaching and/or faculty practice. This position combines leadership in education, clinical dental practice, operations, and administration, and will play a crucial role in turning dental students into competent, independent clinicians.

This position will be in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry under the Division of General Practice. The Division is based upon the group practice model. The group practice is divided into eight group practices (GPs), each coordinated by two group practice leaders. Each GP is responsible for 32 pre‑doctoral dental students.

Specific duties include:

Act as a General Practice Director related to the general dentistry model of clinical instruction at the UMB SOD, including but not limited to:

Meet regularly with assigned GP students; mentor assigned students on academic progress through the clinical portion of the curriculum.

Manage assigned patients to the GP Group.

Work closely with the Patient Care Coordinator; coordinate and help deliver curricular content related to the department (treatment planning, restorative dentistry, diagnostic sciences, or assigned).

Cover clinical sessions with pre‑doctoral students in the clinical setting.

Help ensure that the dental students are competent in the management of patients requiring all disciplines of dentistry.

Assist the Division Director, Director of Predoctoral Education in General Dentistry, Chair of Comprehensive Dentistry, and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in quality assurance and improvement, and compliance efforts.

Respond to assignments from the Chair of Comprehensive Dentistry and the Dean of the School of Dentistry that are essential to the department's and school's operations.

Commit to being a team player in planning, identifying, and resolving problems.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

DMD, DDS from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited institution or foreign equivalent dental degree.

Eligibility for teaching dental licensure in Maryland.

Experience in direct comprehensive patient care and patient management, including phased treatment planning with consultation and collaboration with dental specialties, delivery of operative and direct restorative dentistry as well as single‑unit indirect restorations, triage, and stabilization of patients with initial dental urgent care presentation or post‑operative symptomatic presentation, and development of quality referral recommendations when indicated.

Ability to work well with people of all ages from academically, culturally, and economically diverse backgrounds.

Experience using Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and Power Point.

Hiring range: $135,000 to $155,000 per year (depending on rank and commensurate with education and experience).
