The HVDC and FACTs Burns & McDonnell’s team is looking for a dynamic team member who is excited to join and expand upon their current experience. We are looking for an electrical engineer who craves increasingly challenging assignments while further developing advanced power system knowledge/experience/expertise as a Technical Consultant within our team. This includes various engineering tasks, methods, practices and disciplines related to high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and synchronous condensers.
Responsibilities
Assist in or execute through the electrical design phase from the conceptual phase through to completion and close-out.
Develop Front End Engineering Feed (FEED) documents to support clients with the HVDC and FACTs projects.
Define design electrical components to meet project needs and requirements effectively.
Review, comment on, and advise on engineering drawings for various projects, including HVDC converter stations, FACTS devices, and synchronous condensers.
Represent a strong understanding of electrical engineering and design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the electrical engineering services sector.
Stay current with industry trends and best practices by maintaining up-to-date electrical engineering knowledge.
Lead and contribute to the development of project-specific specifications.
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians while simultaneously managing project tasks.
Prepare technical reports, documentation, calculations, and sketches.
Compile information for client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and workshops focused on advanced power system technologies.
Perform document control activities, including tracking and assigning incoming documents as well as the closing out of outgoing documents.
Support the project manager by coordinating meetings and compiling meeting minutes.
Assist in the preparation of monthly progress reports, including task updates and cost data.
Provide oversight on HVDC and FACTs suppliers’ compliance with relevant policies and standards.
Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 8 years of electrical engineering experience.
Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, along with two years of electrical engineering experience; alternatively, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 8 years of electrical engineering experience is acceptable.
Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
A self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as the capability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Strong computer skills particularly in the Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Consulting experience is considered an asset.
