Responsibilities
Perform technical duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring proper technical practices according to accepted standards.
Maintain, assemble, handle, and sterilize specialty instrumentation.
Follow aseptic technique, proactively identify contamination and implements corrective actions.
Perform surgical counts and report discrepancies appropriately.
Label drugs and solutions and monitor quantities used.
Assist in identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
Plan and set up instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during procedures.
Assist the surgeon, demonstrating understanding of patient anatomy and abnormalities that affect the surgical procedure.
Assist in picking cases and planning instrument needs.
Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information and communicate with the surgical team. Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospitalwide emergency management plans.
Inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment. Assist with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub‑sterile areas.
Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
Serve as a mentor for Surgical Technician trainees and preceptor as needed.
Qualifications
0-3 years of experience as a surgical tech.
Strong communication skills and customer service relations.
Excellent organizational and priority‑setting skills.
Successful completion of service‑specific portion of UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies.
Licensure / Certification Requirements
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Provider certification.
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or individuals with 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech may be substituted.
