Description The Department of Ophthalmology is the only academic eye institution in the region offering the most advanced treatments across all areas of eye care. With world class clinicians, surgeons, scientists and staff dedicated to excellence, and providing the best possible patient care to prevent, treat and cure eye diseases, they have excelled for more than 30 years. The Department of Ophthalmology sees over 120,000 patients a year with almost 5,400 surgeries.

The Comprehensive Optometrist works in clinics focusing on glaucoma and urgent eye care for patients of all ages. Has a broad scope of knowledge and experience in managing glaucoma, ocular disease and disorders of the eye and visual system to maximize visual function and eye health.

Provides glaucoma examinations and assessments. Collaborates closely with department glaucoma specialists. Triages acute eye-related issues and provides urgent eye care including appropriate testing to diagnose, treat and manage ocular health conditions. Collaborates with ophthalmology department specialists and members of the healthcare community. Participates in teaching and research.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree in optometry issued by an accredited school / college of optometry

Optometry residency training in ocular disease

Licensure by the California State Board of Optometry

Thorough knowledge of optometry and skills essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position.

Thorough knowledge of eye disease diagnosis.

Must be able to effectively communicate findings of examination to patients.

Requires strong communication and presentation skills.

Position must be able to work with diverse client groups, including children.

Position must be able to provide direction and guidance to less experienced staff members.

Must be able to work in a collaborative manner with staff, faculty, and members of the healthcare community across the campus.

Requires effective interpersonal skills.

Thorough professional skills in delivering eye care, treatment, and diagnostic services to patients.

Demonstrated ability to use electronic medical record system.

Special Conditions

May need to travel to satellite clinics

Must be able to work various hours and days including evening or Saturday clinics
