Position Summary Manage workflow and provide daily supervision to the medical team, participate regularly in medical care and partner with our Shelter Veterinarian. Ensure operational flow of the day, ensuring that all tasks are completed by all parties and requests from other departments are received and delegated to the staff. Under the guidance of the Shelter Veterinarian and the Director of Animal Care, establish medical standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure they are followed by the team. Produce a healthy environment by monitoring medical needs and maintaining medical care and records while working with St. Hubert’s.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and supervise the Medical Team, including the Clinic Supervisor, Veterinary Clinic Scheduler, Medical Technicians, and Medical Assistants.

Participate in full shelter rounds or designate a staff member from the medical team to attend.

Work with the Animal Care Manager to maintain high standards of animal care and welfare for all animals in program.

Serve as the point of contact for other departments to ensure the medical team upholds responsibilities to other divisions.

Delegate daily tasks and duties, ensuring correct completion.

Supervise with integrity, authority, fairness, and open‑mindedness.

Hire, train, support growth, supervise, and evaluate performance of the Medical Team.

Conduct regular medical staff meetings and coordinate in‑house training, workshops, and deployments with the Director of Animal Care.

Resolve staff conflict and maintain a healthy, safe, and positive work environment for employees and volunteers.

Respond to requests from staff and the public as appropriate.

Act as manager on duty for the Animal Care department or other shelter departments when needed.

Oversee coordination of euthanasia procedures with the Shelter Veterinarian and Director of Animal Care.

Maintain, service, and repair medical equipment within the shelter.

Practice Fear‑Free and humane handling throughout medical rounds and daily procedures.

Establish, oversee, and participate in creation of SOPs for all aspects of medical care.

Ensure animal medical records are accurate, complete, and timely.

Ensure all animals receive appropriate medical care within the appropriate timeline.

Work with outside veterinary partners to provide diagnostics to St. Hubert’s animals when necessary.

Participate in on‑call medical emergency shift and rotate with the on‑call shift.

Maintain accurate drug logs and submit quarterly DEA reporting and other regulatory compliance activities.

Interact professionally with the New Jersey Department of Health on relevant issues such as rabies specimen preparation and observation of Department holds.

Stay within the assigned medical budget and oversee approval of all medical team bills.

Participate in inventory management for the medical department.

Collaborate with the entire operational team at St. Hubert’s – Animal Care, Customer Care, Foster, WayStation, and Community Programs.

Provide excellent customer service to individuals utilizing St. Hubert’s services, representing the organization in a professional and courteous manner.

Qualifications and Requirements

Knowledge of shelter medicine and ability to lead veterinary medical and surgical procedures and processes.

Ability to teach and train all levels of assistants and technicians, ensuring safety and compliance.

Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and motivate a team and identify skills in others for development.

Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, in a multi‑project, shifting priority, deadline‑pressure setting.

Team‑oriented and collaborative approach with the ability to bring out the best in peers.

Strategic thinking and creative problem‑solving skills.

Excellent interpersonal and customer‑service orientation skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, internet, and database management software.

Passion for the mission of St. Hubert’s and caring for all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament, or species.

Ability to manage the emotional aspect of work in a positive, professional manner.

Highly motivated and creative with experience and passion for engaging current and future clients.

Advanced familiarity with dog and cat breeds, animal descriptions, animal control, wildlife, TNR, and low‑cost spay/neuter.

Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50+ pounds assisted.

Comfort working with cats, dogs, small animals, reptiles, fish, and wildlife.

Perform strenuous physical activity daily, including lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, standing, squatting, and bending.

Work holidays, weekends, nights, and inclement weather as needed.

Understand the nature of shelter work, including exposure to deceased, aggressive animals and hostile, irritating persons, zoonotic or other diseases, unpleasant noises, odors, sights, extreme temperatures.

Education and Experience

Minimum three years of progressively responsible experience as a veterinary technician with emphasis on surgical prep and assistance, including managing staff.

Animal shelter experience preferred.

Certified Veterinarian Technician preferred.

Certified Euthanasia Technician preferred.

Fear‑Free certification preferred.
