Safety Manager – Heavy Civil Construction We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead safety initiatives across major transportation and heavy civil infrastructure projects throughout New Jersey and the surrounding region. This individual will be responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing safety programs that ensure a safe working environment for all personnel while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with a deep understanding of construction safety practices and a passion for building a culture of safety on complex, large-scale job sites.

Role Summary The Safety Manager will oversee all aspects of jobsite safety, working closely with project leadership, field teams, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure full compliance and continuous improvement. This role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to engage with teams in the field to promote best practices, identify risks, and drive accountability.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures across all active projects.

Conduct regular jobsite inspections, audits, and safety walkthroughs to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action planning to prevent recurrence.

Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions for employees, subcontractors, and field teams.

Partner with project managers, superintendents, and field leadership to integrate safety considerations into project planning and execution.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, reports, and documentation in accordance with OSHA and company requirements.

Liaise with OSHA, DOT, and other regulatory agencies during site visits, inspections, and reporting processes.

Monitor subcontractor safety performance and ensure compliance with site-specific safety plans and contract requirements.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety culture, reduce incidents, and improve awareness at all levels of the organization.

Serve as a key advisor to leadership on emerging safety trends, regulatory changes, and industry best practices.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).

Minimum of 7–10 years of safety management experience in heavy civil, infrastructure, or transportation construction.

Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT safety standards, and applicable federal, state, and local safety laws.

Experience developing and managing safety programs for large-scale construction projects.

Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage personnel at all levels.

Proven experience conducting training, audits, investigations, and compliance reporting.

OSHA 30 certification required; CHST, CSP, or similar professional safety certifications preferred.

Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites regularly.
