Electrical Engineer – Oil & Gas Join the world‑class engineering team at Black & Veatch and design engineering excellence for the global oil and gas industry. The role is full‑time, based in the world headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas City, or flagship offices in Houston, Texas or Raleigh, North Carolina.

Opportunity

Serve as a Technical Expert or Project Lead performing all aspects of conventional design engineering and analysis.

Support projects encompassing a variety of areas such as Hyrdocarbon Processing (HPI), hydrogen, ammonia & fertilizer, FLNG, LNG and new energy.

Explore various technologies within the process space to expand your skillset and knowledge.

Develop electrical drawing deliverables, including one‑line and three‑line diagrams, motor schematics, breaker control schematics, wiring diagrams, power cable sizing and cable schedules, and complex engineering calculations such as load flow, short circuit, motor starting (ETAP or SKM), Arc flash analysis (ETAP or SKM) and protective relay settings.

Develop electrical equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOM) for procurement and construction.

Create man‑hour budgets and schedules for projects and proposals.

Attend on‑site meetings, investigate existing conditions, interface with clients and provide support during construction.

Extensively use Microsoft Office business systems such as ProjectWise, electrical engineering software such as ETAP, and computer‑aided drafting tools such as AutoCAD to view and manipulate engineering drawing files.

Key Responsibilities

Develop knowledge of design guides, standards, systems and applicable engineering codes and B&V policies; provide technical guidance to other team members.

Apply B&V quality program to assigned tasks; provide guidance and direction to others and support continuous improvement and change management efforts.

Prepare complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and materials selection; manage assigned budget, schedule and quality requirements; review lower level engineering work or assignments.

Coordinate with all internal and external team members on moderately complex projects; communicate client interests and drivers and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work.

Offer support to business development or pursuit activities and provide consulting and guidance to project teams in a particular practice area; design a complete project of moderately complex scope or support multiple projects on complex technical challenges.

Mentor lower level professionals, identify successors, and actively participate in career planning and learning and development.

Preferred Qualifications

Oil & Gas project experience as a design engineer.

Project Lead experience and subject matter expertise in LNG, FLNG, hydrogen, ammonia & fertilizers.

Ability to manage ambiguity and build effective teams.

Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to the assigned engineering discipline.

Petrochemical or Process Industry experience.

Working knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70 National Electrical Code).

Experience with Hazardous Area Classifications as defined by the NEC and API.

Experience with ETAP or SKM electrical system analysis modeling software.

Experience with industrial power distribution system designs including MV and LV switchgear, MCC’s, VFD’s, power distribution transformers, batteries and UPS.

Experience with protective relay settings and equipment sizing calculations associated with power distribution equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an accredited program.

Minimum of 5 years related work experience.

U.S. Professional Engineer License – active registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries.

Certifications Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries, e.g., U.S. Professional Engineer License.
