Senior Software Engineer - Backend

| Ceribell – AI-Powered Point-of-Care EEG

About Ceribell Ceribell is a medical technology company focused on transforming the diagnosis and management of patients with serious neurological conditions. The Ceribell System is a novel, point‑of‑care electroencephalography (“EEG”) platform specifically designed to address the unmet needs of patients in the acute care setting, and is being used in hundreds of community hospitals, large academic facilities and major IDN’s across the country. Our team is driven by a shared commitment to transforming the landscape of critical care through rapid seizure detection technology.

Position Overview We are looking for a skilled Software Engineer with a backend focus to join our dynamic team and help build the next generation of EEG web applications that support critical medical use cases. As a Software Engineer at Ceribell, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving the backend systems of the EEG Portal web application – crucial for healthcare providers, researchers, and clinical teams to access, monitor, and analyze EEG data. You will work closely with fellow Engineers, Product Managers, and Stakeholders to ensure the backend is robust, secure, and able to scale in a medical environment. This is a hybrid role based in our Sunnyvale Headquarters.

What you'll do

Backend Development & Maintenance

– Design, develop, and maintain backend systems to support the EEG Portal application, ensuring reliable performance and compliance with healthcare standards.

Database Management

– Write optimized database queries, implement data migration strategies, and monitor and tune database performance, including indexing, replication, and backup processes.

API Development & Integration

– Develop and maintain RESTful APIs that interact with the frontend and other systems, ensuring they are secure, documented, and able to handle large amounts of sensitive medical data; integrate third‑party services as necessary.

Security & Compliance

– Implement security best practices for data encryption, access control, and auditing to protect sensitive patient and healthcare data.

Documentation

– Document backend code, systems, APIs, database schemas, architecture decisions, and troubleshooting guides; maintain up‑to‑date documentation for onboarding and knowledge sharing.

Performance & Optimization

– Continuously monitor system performance and identify areas for improvement in speed, reliability, and resource utilization.

Collaboration & Communication

– Work closely with product managers, front‑end engineers, data scientists, and QA teams to define and implement feature specifications; participate in sprint planning, stand‑ups, and retrospectives.

Testing & Code Quality

– Write unit, integration, and end‑to‑end tests; conduct code reviews; follow best practices and adopt CI/CD tools for continuous delivery.
