Summary Position: Stationary Engineer at Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Facilities Support Services Division, Washington, DC. Location: Washington, DC. Full‑time permanent. Salary: $52.42 per hour. Work period: 10/14/2025 – 10/27/2025 (Open & closing dates). Remote: No. Telework Eligible: No. Travel Required: Not required. Promotion potential: Yes. Overview This role involves operating, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on utility, ventilation, air‑conditioning, heating, and temperature control equipment at a large industrial production facility. The Stationary Engineer works a 24‑hour, three‑shift schedule and is responsible for maintaining equipment, inspecting systems, and recording daily logs of usage and system performance.

Responsibilities

Operate equipment 24/7 as a member of the Power Plant staff; inspect and adjust control systems for temperature, humidity, and airflow. Use measuring instruments such as voltage testers, multimeters, flow meters, and strobes to perform work assignments on pumps, air handlers, compressors, and chilled‑water distribution plant components. Test and chemically treat water used in cooling towers, chill water systems, hot water systems, and process vacuum pumps that use water as a seal. Maintain high‑pressure steam distribution for steam‑operated production equipment and low‑pressure steam for heating and humidity control to meet product‑quality guidelines. Record daily logs of facility electric, water, gas, and steam meter readings; record logs of central cooling chillers and compressed air systems to minimize downtime. Inspect cafeteria refrigeration, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment; verify that electrical power supply, city water pressure, testing laboratories, and printing sections have proper temperature and humidity conditions.

Qualifications

Valid certification card or certificate in refrigerant removal, recovery, and reclamation. Four‑year apprenticeship as a Stationary Engineer or four years of documented practical experience comparable to such apprenticeship. Four‑year apprenticeship program in HVAC or a journeyman mechanics license or documented experience in industrial/commercial HVAC. Screen‑out element: Ability to do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

Screen‑out and Competency Elements

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and troubleshooting. Use of measuring instruments and technical practices.

Education This position does not have a mandatory education qualification requirement.
