Position Overview
Assistant/Associate Project Scientist - Power System and Market Analysis
– Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Policy, University of California, Berkeley, Spring 2026.
Salary range: $76,700–$115,400 annually. Off‑scale salaries may be offered to meet competitive conditions.
Percent time: 100%. Anticipated start: Spring 2026. Position duration: Initial one‑year appointment with renewal based on performance and funding availability.
Duties
Conduct research and use quantitative methodologies to develop clean transition pathways for China’s power system.
Evaluate economic, health, and social impacts of clean power transition pathways.
Perform literature review and data collection to support development of modeling parameters and inputs for power system modeling in China.
Prepare scientific reports, participate in peer‑review publications, and conduct related technology and policy research.
Engage in outreach activities to communicate research findings.
Travel up to 15% of the time for field research and presentation of findings.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at application)
– PhD or equivalent international degree.
Additional qualifications (required at start)
– Ability to travel up to 15%; eligible to work in the United States (no visa sponsorship).
Preferred qualifications
– Experience with power system modeling using open‑source models such as Gridpath and familiarity with open‑source datasets on power plants, resource assessment, and technology costs.
Experience conducting research on electricity market operation, market designs, and evaluation.
Ability to read Chinese sources.
Experience with energy and emissions, air pollutants, and health impact analysis using exposure‑response functions.
Experience working with public entities and policymaking bodies.
Ability to work independently according to technical guidelines and collaboratively as part of a team.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, Energy and Resources, or relevant qualification with demonstrated research experience in power system modeling and analysis.
