Overview The HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems across campus facilities. This role supports a safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient environment through skilled mechanical, electrical, and control systems work. The technician plays a key role in ensuring the physical integrity of building systems and responding to maintenance issues as needed.
All shifts available: Monday - Sunday, 6 am–2:30 pm, 2:30 pm–10:00 pm, 10:00 pm–6:00 am.
Responsibilities
Install, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain HVAC systems, including:
Condensers, compressors, evaporators, motors, chillers, cooling towers
Heat pumps, air handlers, fans, dampers, duct systems
DX units, filters, valves, gear boxes, and associated piping
Rebuild and repair both commercial and domestic refrigeration systems
Perform preventative maintenance and minor fabrication work
Calibrate, adjust, repair, and operate pneumatic, electronic, and electrical controls
Troubleshoot mechanical and electronic control systems
Coordinate with the BMS team to facilitate adjustments to system parameters, including set points, schedules, and controller updates
Install or replace control boards and wiring related to HVAC operations
Ensure adherence to EPA regulations regarding refrigerant handling, reclaiming, and disposal
Follow all safety protocols when working with high-voltage systems or hazardous chemicals
Maintain service logs and documentation in compliance with regulatory and institutional standards
Respond promptly to urgent maintenance calls affecting HVAC or cooling systems
Provide support for after-hours issues as part of a rotating on-call team when needed
Requirements
Must be able to pass a background check to obtain site badge
10+ years of experience working on commercial HVAC systems
Experience with BMS systems and HVAC energy optimization strategies
EPA/CFC Refrigerant Handling Certification required
Coursework completed in HVAC areas
HVAC journeyman license preferred
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering preferred
Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and building management systems (BMS)
Strong knowledge of HVAC controls, energy management systems, and refrigeration equipment
Familiarity with 480V and below electrical systems, HVAC, and plumbing systems
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Valid driver's license
