Job Highlights:

This is a PRN Day Shift opportunity in our Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

Rooming patients in the correct location

Rounding on patients during infusion appointments

Supporting nurses by monitoring patients receiving infusions

Supplying rooms

EOC rounds each week

Transporting patients

Job Summary Care Partners are responsible for meeting the basic needs of patients by providing skilled levels of bedside patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Care Partners also perform clerical duties necessary to the functioning of the nursing unit.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of Time)

Essential Functions:

The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria.

General Patient Care:

Carries out the patient’s plan of care as it relates to the patient’s physical needs under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

Delivers care requiring broad knowledge of aseptic technique, medical terminology and equipment.

Assists nurses and physicians with procedures.

Maintains knowledge of and operates equipment used in patient care safely.

Retrieves patient care items that are not routinely available on the unit.

Retrieves, recovers or follows up on patient care needs.

Completes unit clerical duties including the coordination of designated unit activities, transcription of orders, medical record maintenance and serving as a unit receptionist.

Prepares rooms prior to admissions and following discharges. Completes patient’s belongings list on admission and transfer.

Directs prompt and courteous attention to the needs of patients, families, and visitors.

Rounds with purpose and engages in service recovery activities referring unusual problems to Nurse Manager/Designate.

Rounds after dietary trays are passed to ensure meals are appropriate for patient care needs.

Takes appropriate action when necessary including resolution of issues related to late or wrong trays.

Feeds and sets up trays as needed.

Maintains supplies and equipment availability.

Notifies appropriate department to maintain a clean safe environment (housekeeping, maintenance, dietary, etc.).

Functions as a resource person to co-workers, patients/families, medical staff, and ancillary personnel.

Safety and Comfort:

Properly places restraints and monitors for circulation, skin integrity, and breathing; assists with repositioning and ROM.

Operates Cardiac Monitor as directed (on/off, alarms, strip acquisition, lead placement).

Vital Signs/Measurement:

Completes Point of Care Testing as approved by hospital and competency.

Obtains vital signs including temperature.

Measures abdominal girth, weighs patients, and tracks intake/output.

Mobility and Exercise;

Applies Pneumatic Anti-Embolism Stockings (TED hose).

Ambulates, turns and positions patients.

Respiratory Care:

Assists with incentive spirometry and cough/deep breath.

Sets up oxygen therapy as directed by Registered Nurse.

Monitors pulse oximetry and completes tracheostomy care as assigned.

Performs suctioning as directed (oral and tracheal when stable).

Wound Care:

Places patient on specialty bed and performs dressing changes (sterile and clean).

Cares for pin care site and monitors traction weights.

Bowel and Bladder Elimination:

Administers enemas and performs straight catheterization with catheter care.

Hygiene:

Provide daily hygiene and grooming; mouth care; ensure fresh water supply at set times; perineal care and toileting.

Specimen Collection:

Obtains various specimens as ordered (urine, sputum, blood, stool, etc.).

Clerical:

Answers phone promptly, assists with orders, transfers, discharges, room changes, labels, and charting per policy.

Safety/Infection Control:

Follows safety and infection control policies; maintains safe and therapeutic environment; completes mandatory requirements; reports concerns; documents procedures concisely.

Service:

Delivers timely, high-quality care in a courteous and respectful manner; communicates effectively and maintains confidentiality; provides cost-effective services.

Qualifications and Education MINIMUM EDUCATION:

High School graduate or GED equivalent and at least 18 years of age. Post High School vocational/specialized training preferred.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

None

REQUIRED COURSE:

Completion of learning program with 80% passing score on written and skills performance examination.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Regular exposure to the risk of blood-borne diseases.

Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.

Exposure to unpleasant elements; may perform emergency care; irregular hours; multiple competing demands.

Prolonged standing/walking; lifting/transferring patients and supplies; potential to lift 100+ pounds.
