Job Purpose Assumes administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for the provision of a program of activities designed to meet the interests and enhance the functional abilities and self‑esteem of each Resident. Manages employees to provide Recreation Services according to the facility’s philosophy. In collaboration with the Administrator, allocates resources in an efficient and economic manner to ensure each resident achieves the highest practicable physical, mental and psychosocial well‑being.

Key Responsibilities

Design recreation programs that meet the functional levels, needs and interests of each resident.

Develop individual and group activities that reflect residents’ interests, are offered at convenient hours, and take place in a variety of locations, including special seasonal events.

Develop and implement effective procedures to inform residents of upcoming activities and maintain an updated calendar.

Develop and update recreation services policies and procedures that reflect the facility’s philosophy and mission.

Participate in the development of the department budget, providing financial information to the Administrator regarding needs and status.

Recruit, hire, and retain qualified staff; conduct interviews, performance reviews, and necessary actions to ensure staff meet qualification and performance standards.

Maintain current skills through continuing education and apply knowledge to job responsibilities.

Participate in fire and disaster drills and carry out assigned duties during emergencies.

Plan and organize recreational activities on a monthly, weekly, bi‑weekly, and general basis, including newsletters, outings, exercise programs, social events, and travel trips.

Supervise activities assistants and fitness instructors, ensuring delivery of quality recreation services.

Minimum Education Required Minimum two (2) years of college education with courses in recreation, education, social work, behavioral sciences or clinical services.

Minimum Experience Required Two (2) years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, with one (1) year full‑time employment in a resident activities program in a long‑term health care setting; or one (1) year in a supervisory role within a recreation program.

Licensure / Certification Required By Law Eligible for certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or as an Activities professional by a recognized accrediting body.

Preferred Qualifications Qualified as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant, or satisfactory background in occupational therapy or allied therapeutic services.
