Lead Structural Engineer – Power & Energy

Overview WSP’s Power & Energy team in Houston, TX seeks a Lead Structural Engineer to design and deliver structural solutions for solar farms, battery energy storage facilities, substations, and large power generation projects. The role spans design, coordination, client interface, and business development across multiple locations, including Hailey, ID; Seattle, WA; Overland Park, KS; Atlanta, GA; Oradell, NJ; Mt. Laurel, NJ; and Boise, ID.

Responsibilities

Design light foundations and structures for solar farms, battery energy storage facilities, and substation projects.

Design heavy foundations and structures for large power generation projects, including generators, turbines, transformers, pipe racks, gas compressors, metal building systems, and masonry walls/buildings.

Design structural steel systems for buildings, platforms, equipment supports, and related components.

Coordinate design requirements with drafter/designers to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Travel to clients, projects, and sites to interface with clients, verify existing conditions, and monitor construction progress (5‑10% travel).

Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.

Collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications – Required

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

7+ years of post‑education experience in engineering discipline with prior structural or civil design experience.

PE license.

Proficiency with structural engineering principles, practices, processes, and application to project work‑related issues.

Well‑defined knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.

Experience with power generation, transmission, and distribution projects.

Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non‑engineering audience.

Demonstrated high‑level of self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, design software (MicroStation, AutoCAD, RISA, STADD), technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach effective, economical, and logical solutions.

Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and directing subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently.

Knowledge of geotechnical engineering.

Experience with pre‑engineered metal building systems.

Experience with seismic analysis and design.

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.

Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.

Open to longer duration field assignments (1‑18 months).

Qualifications – Preferred

Master’s Degree in Engineering.

Compensation Expected salary for all locations: $98,300 – $175,230.
