The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix (COM‑P) is seeking a vice chair of Faculty Affairs and Ethics in the Department of Anesthesiology. This role requires an outstanding leader with a national reputation as a respected and accomplished clinician, educator, and collaborator, with a proven track record in leading large, complex anesthesiology organizations.
Position Highlights
Responsible for managing clinical faculty, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and other healthcare professionals within the Department.
Oversee departmental operations, scheduling, resource management, patient care coordination, and program development.
Promote a professional and respectful work environment while championing quality, safety, reliability, and continuous process improvement.
Partner with B‑UMCP, Banner Health, COM‑P, the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, and regional partners.
Assist in establishing an anesthesiology residency program and mentor faculty.
Maintain and develop faculty through teaching, clinical service, and scholarly work, and qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
Duties & Responsibilities
Promote a professional and respectful work environment.
Advance quality, safety, reliability, and continual process improvement as departmental pillars.
Enforce established standards for perioperative anesthetic care.
Assist with the integration of teaching, research and scholarship in the clinical practice setting.
Represent departmental interests in interactions with COM‑P, Banner Health and private practice groups.
Serve as Chair of the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee.
Provide mentorship to junior faculty regarding career development and leadership advancement.
Lead departmental efforts at clinical program development and workforce planning.
Partner with the chair and departmental administrators in the annual budgeting process, including initialization and year‑end reconciliation.
Act as departmental liaison between faculty/staff and professional billers and coders.
Serve as subject‑matter expert in ethics pertaining to perioperative anesthetic care.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MD, DO or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
Board certified in Anesthesiology and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
Eligible for medical staff membership at B‑UMCP.
Eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the associate professor level or higher.
Experience and recognition in the development and successful implementation of new educational programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with hospital partnership and collaboration.
Experience serving on education or curriculum committees.
Diplomacy and the ability to influence decisions.
Expertise with information technology, clinical metrics, and analytics.
Ability to obtain and apply knowledge to complex matters and exercise decision‑making and problem‑solving techniques.
Project management, program development, and plan execution skills.
High proficiency in developing and maintaining productive interpersonal relationships with medical staff, departmental leaders and administrators.
Effective interpersonal conflict handling and interaction with diverse populations.
Working knowledge of quality improvement processes.
Skills in principle‑based negotiation, persuasion and organization.
Public speaking ability.
Working knowledge of descriptive statistics for analysis and drawing conclusions.
