The Department of Revenue, Taxpayer Account Administration (TAA) division in Tumwater, WA is filling Excise Tax Examiner positions and offering opportunities to join our Training Unit as Excise Tax Examiner 2, In-training. TAA administers forest excise tax, fish tax, tobacco taxes, local sales tax, tax incentives, reseller permits, and more. Fast-paced, high-volume work Detailed tax analysis Challenging work with clear procedures and some complex decision making Use of detailed procedures and research as needed Responsibilities and Duties

Excise Tax Examiner 1: serve as a first-level examiner performing examination and accounting functions for proper identification, assessment, collection, and distribution of excise taxes. This position supports essential return functions including processing: Penalty waivers Uncashed refund requests Returned checks Nonresident refund requests Excise Tax Examiner 2, In-training: analyzes state tax returns filed by businesses, contacts taxpayers to discuss problems, and informs them of overpayments or underpayments. Allocates and distributes local taxes to cities, counties, and other jurisdictions. Key tasks include: Evaluate business activities and records to determine tax liability Educate taxpayers and government entities Answer customer inquiries via phone and web Provide technical support for electronic filing and payment applications Analyze and update taxpayer data Research tax issues and interpret laws, rules, and policies Communicate clearly in writing and verbally Training and Progression

Training details: Excise Tax Examiner 1: complete training and then stay at ETE1 until applying for the In-training role Excise Tax Examiner 2, In-training: paid at the ETE 1 training rate; after graduation and meeting requirements, promoted to Excise Tax Examiner 2 Additional Information

Interviews may be virtual or in person. Telework options are available; travel to the Tumwater duty station may be required for key meetings. Training may be virtual or in-person. Salary ranges are provided in the job posting. Typical work schedule is 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, with flexible scheduling after training. Start date: December 16, 2025. To qualify as an Permanent ETE 1: Produce a high volume of work with accuracy Attention to detail Follow directions and procedures Written communication Customer service and de-escalation Adaptability and flexibility Information technology proficiency (basic formulas, data organization) Independent judgment and decision making Time management and organization Self-management and accountability To qualify as an ETE 2 (in-training as ETE1 during training): All ETE1 competencies plus ability to juggle multiple tasks Expanded written and customer service capabilities Adaptability to changing demands Advanced IT proficiency and file management Continued independent judgment Time management with interruptions Ownership of learning To qualify as an ETE 2: Demonstrate ETE2-in-training competencies and additional knowledge of excise tax functions, systems (ATLAS, My DOR), and Washington excise tax rules Knowledge of penalty waivers, reseller permits, litter tax, frequency changes, and nonresident refunds Desired Qualifications

One year as an Excise Tax Examiner 1 Degree and/or experience in business, public administration, accounting, or related field Four years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, bookkeeping, banking, compliance, or tax administration Accounting or finance coursework Understanding of Washington State excise tax laws and rules Leadership and ability to promote cooperation Knowledge of the legislative process How to Apply
