Overview
Breakthrough Silicon Valley launches talented students who have been historically excluded from higher education. BTSV’s six‑year college access and success program supports students from 7th grade to first year of college and has proven effective with 99% college attendance.
About the Summer Teaching Fellowship Our teaching fellowship provides year‑long instruction in core academic subjects and leadership roles for middle school students. Fellows serve as classroom teachers, crew leaders, and community mentors through a structured orientation and ongoing coaching.
Pre‑Service Orientation
Immersive training on lesson planning, instructional strategies, and classroom management.
Connection building with AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows and Instructional Coach.
Summer Program Experience
Deliver engaging instruction in reading, writing, math, and science.
Lead elective classes that inspire middle school students.
Serve as Crew Leader, fostering community through daily crew time.
Receive regular feedback from Instructional Coach and participate in performance reviews.
Training and Professional Development Throughout the summer, Fellows receive structured feedback, coaching, observation, and support from an experienced Instructional Coach. Training hours will not exceed 20% of total service hours.
Ideal Candidate
Passionate about working with middle‑ and high‑school students.
Eager to tackle a steep learning curve with enthusiasm.
Pride in organizational skills and attention to detail.
Looking to start a career in education, social justice, or public service.
Enjoy laughter and having fun while making a difference.
Can commit to 300+ hours of service from June 15 to August 7, 2026, full‑time.
Requirements
Collaborative team player who demonstrates a growth mindset and commitment to excellence.
Commitment to Breakthrough Silicon Valley’s mission and passion for educational equity.
Recent college graduate or currently enrolled in college or high school.
At least 17 years old at the start of the service period (June 15, 2026).
US citizen, US national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
Access to reliable transportation to program sites via personal vehicle, public transit, or other means.
Spanish or Vietnamese language skills are a plus, but not required.
Compensation & Benefits
$5,294
living allowance (pre‑tax) paid semi‑monthly.
Education award of
$1,565.08
via the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for completing service.
Student loan forbearance, if eligible.
Location BTSV maintains two offices in San Jose. Summer Program sites are: Bridges Academy – 1702 McLaughlin Ave, San Jose, CA 95122, and Herbert Hoover Middle School – 1635 Park Ave, San Jose, CA 95126. Fellows must serve in person; this is not a remote position.
