Summary

Virginia Transformer is seeking a results-driven and hands-on

Director of Strategic Sourcing – Supply Chain

to lead the sourcing and planning strategy across our multi-plant operations. This role is critical to securing a global supply base for highly specialized, custom-engineered transformer components—many with long lead times and complex specifications.

The Director will oversee strategic sourcing for major commodity classes, develop supplier partnerships, lead contract negotiations, and drive visibility and resilience across the supply chain. This leader will partner closely with engineering, manufacturing, logistics, procurement, and finance to deliver cost-effective, risk-mitigated, and scalable sourcing strategies in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Lead global strategic sourcing and supplier management across U.S. and international manufacturing facilities.

Build and execute sourcing strategies across multiple high-value commodities (e.g., copper, steel, cores, bushings, insulation) with annual spend in the hundreds of millions.

Assess and select suppliers based on capabilities, capacity, geopolitical risk, cost structure, quality, and alignment with company goals.

Negotiate and manage long-term supply agreements with strong commercial and operational terms.

Develop and manage supplier relationships, including executive-level engagement across North America, Asia, and Europe.

Collaborate with Engineering, Production, and Planning to align sourcing decisions with custom BOM requirements and long-lead production schedules.

Ensure supply continuity through risk mitigation strategies, capacity planning, and robust contract management.

Drive cost savings initiatives while maintaining quality and delivery standards.

Establish sourcing KPIs, including supplier performance, cost trends, lead times, and compliance.

Support digital transformation efforts and integration of sourcing data into ERP and planning systems.

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of sourcing and planning professionals.

Serve as a key partner to the VP of Supply Chain and executive leadership.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations Management, or related field; Engineering degree strongly preferred. MBA or APICS/CSCP certification is a plus.

12–15 years of progressive experience in supply chain or sourcing, with at least 5 years in leadership.

Proven experience leading global strategic sourcing in complex manufacturing, ideally in electrical, capital equipment, or transformer industries.

Expertise in managing high-mix, low-volume sourcing models with custom-engineered components.

Demonstrated success in building supplier partnerships and negotiating long-term agreements with global impact.

Strong financial, analytical, and commercial acumen.

Hands-on leadership style with the ability to drive cross-functional collaboration and execute under pressure.

Deep knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and sourcing technologies (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
