Job Description
Strategic finance leader needed to drive growth, shape financial strategy, and make a lasting impact. Reporting to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, the Director of Finance will lead budgeting, forecasting, audit coordination, compliance, financial reporting, and financial planning for a $26 million nonprofit that serves early childhood education to active aging programs. The role ensures financial health, timely insights to senior leadership, and strict compliance with GAAP, FASB, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
Lead the daily operations of the finance department, overseeing all accounting functions (general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, monthly close). Supervise, hire, train, and manage the finance team.
Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
Oversee and continuously improve internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
Lead the annual financial audit and 990 preparations, coordinating with external auditors and implementing audit recommendations.
Ensure readiness for funder audits and ongoing compliance with GAAP, FASB standards, and legal/regulatory requirements.
Design and manage the annual operating and capital budgeting process, consolidating department budgets into an organization‑wide budget and delivering board‑ready presentations and dashboards.
Build and maintain rolling forecasts integrating programmatic, operational, and philanthropic assumptions; conduct quarterly reforecasting.
Build financial models for new programs, services, or earned revenue initiatives, incorporating enrollment, pricing, staffing, and overhead assumptions.
Model philanthropic impact and ROI for new initiatives or capital investments in partnership with development staff.
Work with development, program, and finance staff to oversee grant budgeting, tracking, compliance, and reporting for restricted funds.
Serve as a strategic partner to operational and program leadership, translating financial data into actionable insights and providing budget coaching and financial literacy support.
Support the CFAO in preparing materials for Finance Committee, Investment and Endowment Committee, Audit Committee, Facilities Committee, Board of Directors, including dashboards and multi‑year projections.
Participate in special projects and strategic planning processes as required by senior leadership.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, economics, or related field required; MBA, CPA, or similar advanced credential strongly preferred.
7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in financial analysis, planning, or budgeting, preferably in a nonprofit, educational, or mission‑driven setting.
Proven experience modeling earned revenue programs and philanthropic initiatives.
Prior experience supporting organizational leadership and working cross‑functionally with operations, human resources, and fundraising.
Advanced Excel skills (complex formulas, pivot tables, financial modeling).
Strong data visualization and report presentation abilities.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present financial data to non‑financial audiences.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, organizational, and multitasking skills with a proactive, solutions‑oriented mindset.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain high‑quality standards.
