Network Engineer – 3‑Month Contract
Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is hiring a Network Engineer 2 on a 3‑month contract to support the network infrastructure of its 181 schools and administrative sites. CMS is one of the largest employers in Mecklenburg County and serves more than 140,000 students across 181 schools.
Key Responsibilities
Installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of wireless access points (APs), switches and routers.
Administration of the CMS Local Area Network (LAN), network management software (SolarWinds, Desktop Toolset, Network Servers) and data closets according to departmental standards.
Second‑level support for network‑related tickets (Cherwell Ticketing System); escalation to Level 3 Network Engineer when necessary.
Documentation of “how‑to” guides, site configurations, ticket system information and other required documentation.
Participation in hardware, firmware, software projects and updates.
Root cause analysis and troubleshooting of wireless and IoT device configuration issues.
Required Qualifications
Intermediate level experience in network engineering; CCNA, CCNP or Network+ preferred.
Experience with Cisco switches, Cisco routers and wireless technologies.
Strong knowledge of network diagrams and proficiency with Visio.
Basic knowledge of voice, cabling, and wireless cabling standards.
Previous experience in an educational environment is a plus.
Pay & Benefits Hourly rate: $30.00–$35.00/hr (converted to a temporary salary range of $57,975–$74,205 based on district matrix). Benefits may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), life insurance, disability, HSA, transportation, and paid time off. Full details are available upon request.
Workplace & Commitment This is a fully onsite position located in Charlotte, NC. The contract is 3 months on a hire‑basis; duties include support of 35–40 schools/sites, each roughly 2 miles apart.
