Automation Controls Engineer The Automation Controls Engineer is responsible for researching, developing, and implementing standards and specifications related to controls and automation systems within Vehicle Process Engineering (VPE). This role involves leading and supporting the development of control system standards, driving technical innovation, and providing training during specification rollout and system implementation.
The Controls Specialist will serve as a technical expert supporting production and launch activities, ensuring that controls systems operate reliably and meet performance, safety, and quality objectives. The position also acts as a liaison between engineering, system integrators, IT, and plant management teams.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, review, and implement VPE controls and automation standards and specifications.
Lead and support the rollout of new technologies and control system improvements.
Provide technical support during production operations and launch events.
Collaborate with system integrators, IT, and plant engineering teams to ensure compliance with design and installation standards.
Present and educate cross‑functional teams on new technical innovations and control system standards.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to hardware, software, and network communication within controls systems.
Technical Focus Areas
Rockwell PLC Programming (Logix, RSLogix, Studio 5000)
AGV Routing and Commissioning
Rockwell, Emerson, and Lenze Drives
SEW and Nord Motors
DeviceNet (DNET) and Ethernet (ENET) Networks
Robot Interface and Integration
Basic Programming with Fanuc, Nachi, and ABB Robots
Basic Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience in controls and automation engineering.
At least 5 years of plant or manufacturing experience focused on controls systems.
Demonstrated project management experience.
Strong knowledge of PLC programming (Rockwell Logix, RSLogix, Studio 5000).
Experience with HMI development tools such as FactoryTalk View or similar software.
Strong problem‑solving skills related to controls hardware, software, IT systems, and network design.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Electrical, Controls, or related Engineering field.
Experience in vehicle process engineering or manufacturing launch environments.
Proven ability to lead teams of engineers and technicians.
Proficiency with electrical design software (ePlan, AutoCAD).
Experience developing bid packages and coordinating installation of controls‑related equipment.
Innovative and organized, with strong project management and leadership skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Access, Outlook, SQL).
Self‑motivated and capable of implementing improvements in dynamic manufacturing settings.
