The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher. Our goal is to give students meaningful work that builds on what they are learning in the classroom. Our programs are project based. Students will receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it in our project expo at the end of the summer. Our more than seven decades of progressive growth can be attributed to our determination to develop innovative systems and solutions, exercising environmental stewardship and enhancing the well-being of the communities in which we work and live. Shift: May 18th - Aug 7th

Pay Rate: $18.00 – $23.00

Position Summary This position will support the Health and Safety team by assisting with programs and initiatives to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. The Safety Engineering Co-op will play a key role in supporting workplace safety initiatives by analyzing trends, conducting compliance audits, and developing actionable improvement plans. The Co-op offers hands-on experience in safety culture development, risk assessment, and engineering controls. The role emphasizes influencing safe behaviors, improving safety standards, and collaborating across departments to drive change. The ideal candidate is observant, detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to promoting health and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and propose engineering controls such as machine guarding and fall protection enhancements.

Conduct self-assessments and compliance audits aligned with OSHA standards.

Learn and apply risk assessment methodologies to evaluate workplace hazards.

Support development and delivery of safety training materials and programs.

Participate in Kaizen events and hazard identification activities.

Collect, analyze, and report safety data and incident trends.

Help maintain safety documentation and compliance records.

Research and recommend best practices to enhance workplace safety culture.

Collaborate with team members on safety improvement projects and initiatives.

Perform other safety-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum 2.5 GPA.

Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Environmental Health and Safety or Industrial Engineering.

Reliable transportation to and from work.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or other relevant tools.

Co-op Details

Co-ops will complete 3 rotations for a 1.5 year commitment. The co-op will need to still be enrolled in school during these semesters to be eligible.

Ability to work 40-hour work weeks during rotation.

Willingness and ability to commit to a minimum of 3 rotations.
