Southwire’s College Programs provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher. Programs are project-based: students receive a project at the start of the summer and present it at the project expo at the end. Job Description

Job Summary/Objective

The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work. Interns and co-ops receive real-world applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment after graduation. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects related to their field of study and will be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo. All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation. Ready to explore new horizons in your own development as a Southwire Intern or Co-op and help us power what’s possible?

Key Responsibilities

Intern assignment generally 10–12 weeks; co-op assignment generally 16–18 weeks, with an assigned project and opportunities to present your work.

Collaborate on other projects and work with peers and leaders, many of whom began as interns/co-ops.

Receive a robust developmental experience through onboarding and offboarding, a mentor, networking opportunities, events, and community service/volunteer initiatives.

Impact the future of the organization while being part of a world-class program community.

Long Description

This position will support the maintenance and production teams by contributing to key projects and initiatives aligned with MC Plant’s strategic goals. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively. They should be eager to learn, demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, and possess excellent communication and analytical skills.

Key Responsibilities

Provide support to maintenance and reliability teams with process improvement projects.

Assist with the design, development, and testing of new or modified equipment, components, and systems.

Support data collection and analysis for root cause investigations, failure analysis, and quality improvement initiatives.

Assist in updating and creating engineering documentation, standard operating procedures, and process flow diagrams.

Collaborate on continuous improvement projects to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance safety within manufacturing processes.

Participate in equipment installations, program upgrades, commissioning activities, or process trials under guidance from engineers.

Utilize CAD software to create or revise drawings, layouts, or models as needed for project work.

Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other deliverables to communicate project progress and results.

Engage with cross-functional teams including maintenance, production, quality, and safety to drive project success.

Support internal and external communication efforts related to engineering projects and initiatives.

Perform other engineering-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum 2.5 GPA.

Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Reliable transportation to and from work.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or other relevant tools.

Demonstrates competence and a positive attitude.

Co-op Specifics

Co-ops will complete 3 rotations for a 1.5-year commitment and must remain enrolled in school during these semesters to be eligible.

Ability to work 40-hour work weeks during rotation.

Willingness and ability to commit to a minimum of 3 rotations.
