Position Summary We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer with extensive experience across the full product lifecycle, from proof of concept through production. This role requires deep expertise in digital system architecture design, embedded microprocessor circuit board development, and integration of power management, motor drives, displays, speakers, sensors, and wireless communication. The ideal candidate will lead complex engineering projects, contribute to technical strategy, and collaborate seamlessly with cross-functional teams. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Drive product development from concept to production, ensuring system-level optimization throughout the lifecycle. Lead the design, integration, and validation of embedded microprocessor circuit boards and peripherals. Define and implement best practices for electrical architecture development, hardware design releases, and transfer to production. Develop motor drive solutions, including motor driver IC selection and motor control algorithm development. Design and optimize power management systems, including battery charger design for improved performance and efficiency. Develop sensor technologies, including air-in-line detection, pressure sensing, and motor position measurement. Integrate wireless communication technologies, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular, into system designs to enhance connectivity and functionality. Collaborate closely with Software, Systems, Mechanical, Reliability, and Test Engineering to ensure seamless integration and performance. Develop design specifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Provide technical leadership and mentorship, fostering growth within engineering teams. Contribute to strategic technical direction and roadmap planning for engineering initiatives. Work with contract manufacturers on circuit board development, ensuring smooth design transfer and production readiness. Apply design-for-manufacture principles to optimize cost, reliability, and scalability of circuit boards. Develop and implement circuit board ICT (in-circuit testing) and functional test strategies to validate designs before full-scale production. Knowledge & Skills Proven expertise in embedded circuit board design, including microprocessor-based systems and peripheral integration. Strong understanding of power management systems, motor drives, sensor technologies, and wireless communication. Experience working with contract manufacturers, ensuring seamless design transfer and production optimization. Deep knowledge of design-for-manufacture and design-for-test principles, improving efficiency and reliability in circuit board production. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, ensuring smooth collaboration across disciplines. Excellent problem-solving skills, with an innovative approach to engineering challenges. Experience developing patents, technical publications, or industry-leading innovations. Strong leadership in defining business technical strategy and long-term engineering vision. Preferred to have knowledge of regulatory standards for medical devices, industry best practices, and product compliance (IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, IEC 60601-1-8, etc.). Minimum Qualifications, Education & Experience Must be at least 18 years of age Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field (master's or PhD preferred). 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with a strong focus on digital system and architecture design. Work Environment Typically requires travel 5-10% of the time Due to the nature of this role, which involves direct collaboration with cross-functional teams, hardware development, and lab testing, the Principal Electrical Engineer must be onsite daily at the ICU Medical – Lake Forest site. This job operates in a professional office environmentincluding an electrical engineering laboratory. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time; depending on the test equipment they are using Must be able to occasionally move and lift objects of up to 25 lbs and willing to transport equipment to 3rd party EMC labs for testing purposes. Salary Range - $123,750-$177,375 The salary range displayed represents the annual base salary we reasonably expect to pay for this role.
