Overview

Graduate Assistant (Hall Director), Residence Life at University of Nebraska at Kearney. The role involves developing a supportive, functioning community within a residence hall and co-supervising a paraprofessional staff, advising individual students and student groups, resolving behavioral problems, and assisting in the management of residence halls. GHDs work with other Residence Life staff and Student Affairs offices. Hiring occurs as positions become available; specifics may be reviewed in the GHD job description. Responsibilities

Staff Supervision: Supervise paraprofessional staff; conduct or assist with staff meetings; activities include team building, goal and expectation setting, ongoing training and development, day-to-day advisement, training, and ongoing formal and informal appraisal. Community Building: Develop and maintain a residential community; maintain close contact with residents; be aware of student problems and concerns; mediate student conflicts; encourage and develop student activities and programs. Education/Conduct: Help students develop behavioral standards appropriate to group living in an academic setting; confront individuals when necessary and process cases through the conduct system. Advising and Referral: Provide basic counseling and function as a resource and referral agent for staff and residents; flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Management: Coordinate facility management with maintenance and custodial staff, central staff, and other departments on occupancy, fire safety, security, and damage control. Residential Curriculum: Help establish a residential learning curriculum; work with student teams to develop educational strategies and learning outcomes; support program objectives; engage with faculty and staff to develop related learning communities and themed housing initiatives. Administrative Tasks: Oversee personnel and programming functions within the residential community; provide required written information/documentation; attend weekly staff meetings and trainings; be on duty as assigned. Additional Responsibilities: Perform other job-related duties as assigned by leadership. Qualifications

Graduate student with a solid academic foundation and significant residence life experience; enrollment in six graduate credit hours per semester is required (first semester allows six; subsequent terms may be up to 9 with supervisor approval). Demonstrated leadership ability. Commitment to self-development and growth. Minimum 3.0 cumulative and semester GPA. Admission to University of Nebraska degree program. Preferred Qualifications

Experience in residence life or significant student leadership experience. Physical Demands: Schedule 19 hours per week; some evenings and weekends required.
