Overview
The Program Assistant observes, records, and responds to the comings and goings of guests/residents/participants and staff, and maintains a safe and comfortable environment. They support the program services team by providing trauma-informed assistance. This is a unionized position, represented by Local 8 of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU). About the Program
Otto’s Place Enhanced Shelter removes barriers for individuals transitioning out of homelessness by combining overnight shelter with 24/7 on-site support services and intensive case management, behavioral clinician, and housing navigation. It provides 100 individual sleeping areas for male-identifying guests, meals, laundry, and service pets. Referrals are directed by the City of Seattle’s The Hope Team. About the Organization

LOCATION: Pioneer Square Neighborhood (Seattle, WA) REPORTS TO: Shift Supervisor and Program Coordinator FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt SCHEDULE: Wednesday-Sunday 11:55pm-8am with biweekly staff meetings on Thursdays 1-2pm MEAL PERIOD: Paid (30 minutes) SALARY RANGE: $26.25 per hour (Step 1*) including the $1.75 overnight shift differential *Step 2: 2.5% increase after a consecutive year of employment Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Direct Services Provide trauma-informed monitoring of activity in and around the building to ensure safety, security, and comfort of guests/residents/participants and staff. Mediates conflicts and provides de-escalation and crisis intervention; models problem solving and refers to appropriate services as needed. Assist in support of program activities, including meal services, laundry assistance, group activities, or other similar tasks. Engage guests/residents/participants to assess needs, providing immediate information and referrals. Respond to issues as directed by program management and/or property management. Report guest/resident/participant and/or building needs to management and ensure supplies/equipment are in stock. Monitor security cameras, perform security rounds, check lights, doors, and windows, and investigate complaints. Log actions, incidents, and rule enforcement; report unusual or sensitive matters to the Program Coordinator/Manager. Control after-hours front door/access and monitor logs, enforcing rules and restrictions. Follow building and staff safety and emergency procedures per agency policies. Perform light janitorial duties as assigned. Leadership Recognize the value of diverse perspectives and cultures. Maintain a cooperative and harmonious working climate with other agency employees. Project a favorable image of the organization to promote its aims and objectives. Perform duties in a timely and effective manner in accordance with agency policies. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and respect for participants from diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of de-escalation, crisis intervention, and stabilization techniques. Knowledge of local resources for individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with interruptions and crisis situations. Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries. Ability to follow agency policy and procedures to maintain safety and security. Interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence; ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds. Team-oriented with strong collaboration and independent work capabilities. Excellent written and verbal communication; problem-solving skills; aptitude for learning Microsoft and office software. Ability to learn new office equipment and devices. Education and/or Experience
At least 1 year of experience in a social/human service setting (preferred). Training around belonging, compassion, and meeting people where they are (preferred). Familiarity with housing instability, mental health, substance use, sexual assault, and/or domestic violence (preferred). Experience working where language may be a barrier (preferred). Current WA State Food Handlers Permit (preferred; if not current, sponsorship within 1 month of hire). Degree in human/social services or related field is a complement to required experience. Physical Demands
Regularly communicate verbally and in writing; stand, walk, and use hands; lift up to 20 pounds occasionally. Work in a social services/shelter environment with long periods at a computer and stairs; may involve shifts in a secure facility. Privacy and safety considerations apply; accommodations available per ADA. Work Environment
Onsite work only; Compass programs are in a human services environment in the Greater Seattle area. The work involves contact with a diverse client population and may include hazardous chemicals and infectious materials; safety training is provided. Compass facilities are monitored by cameras in public areas; guests may have private surveillance in units.
