Connecticut Careers Trainee (Engineering & Related) – Target Class: Transportation Planner 1
Position: Connecticut Careers Trainee in the Office of Transit & Ridesharing, Newington, CT.
Job Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday–Friday, Hybrid work schedule.
Salary: $55,328 – $76,156 per year (state service minimum).

Position Overview The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) seeks a motivated trainee to support both the Urban Transit Districts/Paratransit Unit and the Planning/Data Analysis Unit. The role offers professional growth, a healthy work/life balance, and the opportunity to develop skills essential for a transportation planning career.
Responsibilities
Project Management: Assist and participate in transit studies, ensuring compliance with federal/state requirements, monitoring timelines, reviewing budgets, managing data, and processing invoices.
Program Coordination & Support: Prepare PowerPoint presentations, schedule and conduct meetings, communicate with stakeholders, organize spreadsheets, research documents, and write reports.
Stakeholder Coordination: Work closely with CTtransit branded service providers and independent transit districts regarding planning initiatives, service operations, and financial/performance data.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum experience and training for the Transportation Planner 1 class at completion of the training program.
Proficient oral and written communication skills.
Ability to acquire knowledge and skills for the target classification, evaluate and solve problems, interpret data, and establish cooperative relations.
Proficiency with computer software.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Urban & Regional Planning, Geography, Sociology, Economics, or related field.
Experience developing technical and written reports.
Experience analyzing complex documents and data, deriving insights, and communicating results.
Experience with Microsoft Office, ESRI ArcGIS, graphic design, or related software.
Experience working collaboratively within a team and with external stakeholders.
Knowledge of transportation planning and operations.
