Responsibilities

Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications for patient care according to professional standards and state and federal requirements. Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to ensure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients. Directs pharmacy staff in mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals. Provides information to pharmacy customers on drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage.

Educate healthcare professionals and patients on medication use and on compounding and dispensing prescribed medications for patient care.

Performs activities related to distribution of medications, maintenance of drug inventory, and management of patient records and patient financial records.

Supervise interns and technicians in the assigned area. Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.

Accept responsibility for orders including review, clarification, order entry, accuracy, preparation, follow-up, and delivery to the correct unit. Identify and resolve problems related to drug therapy.

Read and interpret physician orders to ensure correct drug product, strength, dosage, start/stop times, and inventory. Ensure appropriate products are selected for accurate dosing.

Verify controlled substance inventories, minimize drug diversion, and document wastes or missing doses. Conduct routine nursing unit inspections and narcotics audits.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree in pharmacy required.

At least 3 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy preferred.

Current license in the state of Texas.

Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with physicians and hospital personnel.

Essential Functions

Physical Demands

Positions may require sitting, standing, lifting up to 20 pounds regularly, and occasional lifting of heavier loads with assistive devices; reasonable accommodations may be provided.

Manual dexterity for handling, preparing, and dispensing medications; vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
