The Barrow Emergency Stroke Treatment Unit (BESTU) is a specially equipped and staffed mobile emergency room that brings expert stroke care directly to patients. The mobile stroke unit contains a portable lab and CT Scanner, clot-dissolving drugs, and a trained stroke team. The team connects with a Barrow vascular neurologist via telemedicine. Barrow launched the unit in partnership with the Phoenix Fire Department, whose 911 dispatchers deploy the unit whenever they receive a call about a possible stroke within the unit’s response radius. The collaboration speeds the process in which strokes are diagnosed and treated, with the goal of reducing death and long-term disability among stroke victims.

Neurological Examinations Provided by Barrow Vascular Neurologists via Telemedicine
Responsibilities
Performs CT scanning, recommends performance improvement activities, and assists in equipment and procedure evaluations in the mobile stroke setting.
Performs CT scans based on current protocols and/or radiologist recommendations. CT scans include but are not limited to: Trauma/ER, Perfusions, Routine Body, Routine Neuro, Cardiac and Interventional Procedures. Utilizes good radiation safety practices for patients, self and others. Uses ALARA on every exam when selecting parameters for exam based on patient age and habitus.
Accurately and proficiently performs work-ups, such as perfusions & reconstructions, on the 3-D workstation.
Accurately and thoroughly completes hospital/department specific forms per protocol. Completes exams in Radnet. Completes incident reports/extravasations forms. Completes patient contrast information forms. Scans in documentation as required into PACS.
Minimum Job Requirements
High School Diploma/GED
Completion of an approved American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) or equivalent Radiologic Technologist Program.
Must hold and maintain AZ DHS Bureau of Special Licensing: (1) CRT — Certified Radiologic Technologist (CT CRT) and (2) CTCT — Certified Technologist/Computed Tomography; AZ Driver’s License (DRV LIC).
Must hold and maintain national credentials: (3) American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (CT ARRT) and (4) American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CT CPRBLS).
