This job is on-site in Bailey, CO. _________________________________________________________________________________________ General Purpose
The Camp Nurse is responsible for the daily health care services provided at a Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) camp property. This position provides daily, weekly, and on-call health care and medication administration for all persons, working under the technical supervision of an on-call licensed physician. Additionally, this role supports the property, hospitality, operational, program, & cabin leadership team as needed as part of the camp team. A primary function of this, and every other job at camp, is to ensure that each member, guest and visitor receives the highest caliber of service. Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job) General Responsibilities – Ensure the implementation of health and emergency procedures as written in the Camp Health Plan, Medical Standing Orders, and in accordance with the Colorado Dept. of Health & Child Protective Services and American Camp Association (ACA) standards. – Work within the communicable disease plan to ensure safe and healthy practices and measures are taken to help mitigate the spread of illness. – Provide support in routine health care and emergency situations in consultation with the Executive Director in keeping with established health care guidelines and daily standing operating procedures. – Work with camp health team and camp directors to provide health care for all persons within camp program established guidelines. – Communicate and advise Executive Director and staff on camper accommodations to provide for special medical/health/wellness considerations. – Maintain constant and professional communication with caregivers regarding the health care and services provided to campers. – Provide support in the routine and emergency health procedures in consultation with the executive camp director and in keeping with established guidelines. – Participate as an active member of the camp staff team within all aspects of camp program. – Provide advice to the health staff regarding health issues which arise. – Provide in-person Medication Administration Training for staff who will be delegated to assist in the proper dispensing of medication. – Ensure proper execution of procedures for dispensing routine medications and charting of all medication. – Review medical & health treatment log forms, illness, injury, and incident reports and MARs. – Follow up to assure campers receive medications as directed and follow up on treatment given. – Communicate to health staff and executive director the recommendations for supply/equipment needs, changes in general procedures and site hazards. – Maintain good relationships with health and emergency service providers and the public. – Act in loco parentis regarding the health services for all campers in overnight camp sessions. – Support campers in daily living, camp activities, and developing peer relationships as applicable. – Provide overnight supervision and care to campers and staff when housed in Health Center (as applicable). – Perform ongoing health/medical/first aid support for camp staff and campers. – Advise all staff on camp-wide health procedures & practices. – Provide health/first aid advice to all staff according to procedures. – Verify first aid and medical reports given by all staff and follow up on treatment. – Monitor staff first aid treatment throughout the season. – Provide supervision and guidance to health team including but not limited to Health Assistant(s) and Wellness Supervisor. Administration
– Manage administrative responsibilities in a timely, independent, and detail-oriented manner. – Accountable for the documentation and review of the health/medical practices and procedures at camp. – Participate in camper and staff feedback forms as necessary for the overall camp’s strategic planning. – Interact with digital systems including WorkBright, CampMinder, Office365, Slack, Instagram, & Facebook. – Respect the confidential nature of all information pertaining to staff, volunteers, and campers. – Participate in regular staff meetings and training for planning purposes, communication resolutions, and carrying out assignments. – Coordinate and communicate schedules to campers & staff as necessary. – Carry out ongoing observations to ensure that goals and expectations of leadership & health care services are positive and appropriate. – Follow policies, procedures, and standards set by the American Camping Association, Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints, Colorado Department of Health and Human Services, and other certifying industry organizations. Qualifications
Education and/or Formal Training Current Colorado state license in health care (minimum of RN). Current BLS. Willing to obtain a medication administration/QMAP instructor qualification. Must have current or willingness to obtain Child Abuse Mandated Reporter and Universal Standard Precautions certifications. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience Experience within the health care industry. Flexible and adaptable dealing with changing situations, environment, and procedures. Experience within crisis management. Preferred experience or desire for working with children. Preferred experience working in an outdoor program and/or camp setting. Working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Preferred experience in leadership of children, peers, or staff. Willing to provide innovative and engaging program development and facilitation in an informal, outdoor setting. Additional Requirements
Must be able to pass a criminal background check acceptable to GSCO standards. Must be at least 21 years of age. Valid driver’s license, driving record acceptable to the Girl Scout insurance company standards, with 5 years of driving experience. Must be able to live on site during the camp season Work Environment & Physical Activities
Camps are at altitudes of 8,000-9,500 feet. Ability to work non–traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and extended overnight periods. Willingness to support all health, emergency purposes, camper supervision, and program implementation. Required daily, frequent exposure to highly stimulating and loud environments. Program activities are carried out outdoors often in inclement weather. Requires extensive walking/hiking >2 miles/day over uneven and unpaved terrain. Able to carry, lift and/or transfer at least 50 pounds. Must have interpersonal skills/behaviors to work with individuals with a range of moods & behaviors in a tactful, congenial manner.
